To Savoy and back

Savoy is a very old cultural region in the Alps south of Lake Geneva, located mainly in France nowadays. Places like Annecy, Chambéry, Evian and Chamonix - Mont Blanc are located in Savoy.

I did a short trip during a longer weekend there, mainly for hiking. The place was well above my expectations, and I found Swiss-level stuff at much lower prices Stunningly beautiful, very clean and civilised, and very well kept. I will definitely visit the place again, for a longer stay.

It's not that far, so we made it as a road trip, travelling south towards Basel, then through Switzerland where we did a short break for food, entering France a bit later through Geneva.

On the German A5, choosing the right lane for entering Switzerland

Even though a part of Schengen for almost a decade now, the Swiss still haven't removed their barriers and booths at the border, causing long queues and traffic jams...

Not far into Switzerland and you already see signs for Italy

Back on the road. The Swiss motorways are narrower and with tighter bends, which means the speed limits are also low, with 120 km/h at best. Many stretches were set at 80, just to annoy you.

But at least the scenery is nice

Home away from home. We stayed here in a tiny village called Manigod, which is close to a small town called Thônes, which is on the other side of a mountain from Annecy.

The next morning

We went to Annecy. It was market day, so the old town was full of locals buying fresh food

Right outside of Annecy, we hiked to Mont Veyrier for some nice views of the lake and mountains

The next day we went to the real mountains Started with a trip to Aiguille du Midi, at 3842 m, one of the highest cable car stations in Europe.

The round trip is 60 euros for person, which might sound much but it's worth every cent. I've been at over 3000 meters before in the Alps, and felt the lack of oxygen, but this time it was quite intense, at least for me. Had to get back due to feeling worse and worse, not because of boredom.

Aiguille du Midi is also a starting point for climbers to go to Mont Blanc. The real stuff, not for tourists.

This pic is taken from the intermediary station, at 2317m. Here you have a couple of minutes to get dressed, as it's really cold up there. Also, from here to Aiguille du Midi (that peak in the middle) there are no support pillars. Just one long cable.

And at the top, view towards the East. All these mountains are made out of granite, which is why they manage to maintain these pointy shapes.
