New caretaker

I'd like to announce that SkyscraperCity is moving to VerticalScope, a professional Toronto based web-publishing company which owns and fosters many popular forums.

Managing a large webforum means you have to be available 24/7/365. Having done this for over 15 years, it'll be a relief that the back end part of the job will be out of my hands and in the capable hands of others. For me personally, it's just time. The online world is a fast changing landscape which I find increasingly difficult to keep up with. For the future of the forums it is good that it is backed by the experience which is needed to operate a webforum in this day and age, and that it will continue to operate without being dependant on one person.

Other than the behind the scenes work, very little else will change. VerticalScope is one of the few that will purchase a website and let the original community continue to flourish and live with minimal change. I will still be around as ever, while VerticalScope will manage the back end side of it.

As you may have noticed, the site has been transferred to a much needed new hosting environment, which means we are good to go for years to come. As you can imagine move a site of this size is a large undertaking, we’re working on ironing out the bugs that we’re still having, but know that we’re on it.

Please join me in saying thanks to Mike (DaiTengu), who has hase done miracles in keeping this up for many years, and in welcoming Kyle (vsadmin) as our new forum admin, who will be helping us to keep doing what we do best.

Many thanks,
- Jan

Hello everyone,

My name is Kyle, I am a community manager for VerticalScope, I work with a small team that will continue to manage the webmaster duties on SkyScraperCity.com.

We are here to help primarily with the technical end of things and help make the jobs of the current Mods/Admins easier. I posted a real basic run down to answer common questions below. If you have more questions or concerns please feel free to post them in response.

What are our intentions?

We bring reliability, support and the infrastructure needed to ensure that the community will continue to be around for years to come. It’s our goal to work with the mod/admin team to help provide the resources and required work to give this community a broader reach, to attract new members, and to better the overall knowledge shared in the community.

Will leadership change?

Continuity is the focus here, YOU as the membership work very hard to keep building this community while your mod/admin team keep the walls and the roof up in this place; we are primarily here to make sure the lights stay on. Every community is unique and should always be respected in that regard. You all have established your own unique rules and regulations and a strong reputation that is carried by all of this. For us it’s paramount to maintain this level of integrity and enthusiasm.

What am I here for?

Our primary role is to be the technical contact; you all contributed to building the strong foundation the site was built on. Moving forward we will all work together to keep the momentum and the community growing. We will be on the forum checking in regularly to make sure regular maintenance is taken care of and keeping things running smoothly from behind the scenes.

Looking forward to working with you all.

Thanks,

Kyle

Hi Kyle.
As i understand from your short q&a/introduction, infamous forum traditions like the day of the german banner will hopefully be kept alive?
Or will the non-technical stuff remain in jans hands anyway?

Unless it's something we cannot technically support like we don't have a working script for it or it was already being discontinued it will be kept alive.

Do we stay on the same platform? Does the forum outlay changes? Do we still have: rate the banner and guess the city features on the front page?

We won't be changing the platform in the near future, if and when we come to that there will be a test environment to get people on board and beta etc

It is my understanding that those were being discontinued in their present iteration.

What I like about SSC is that is very distincive. There are also some old school forums that way on internet. These days new forums and forum platforms are too broad and general and you easily lose yourself. I hope SSC stays as it is or at least minimal outlay changes to be done...

Will there be a forum cleanup in the near future? What I mean is that once upon a time, there were subforums that were quite active but have decreased in activity over the years and now appear dead (Example). Will there be any work on merging vacant sub-sections?

If one of the objectives is to attract new members, I think one of the easiest ways to do this is to clean up less active subforums so they look busier.

Also, investing in SEO so SSC threads can appear higher up in search engine results can help attract new members too (though SSC may already be doing this).

SEO? I bother that such investment could be not so smart movement. Some sections (including Polish one) may be flooded by trolls in such case. Proper threads are popular even without any SEO activity

You are regarding to the case of Iranian subforum. An other thread is about that one. It's not a question of decreasing popularity, but the technical (and also a bit political) one, related to the local government policy on website access.

Welcome Kyle, and my massive respects to DaiTengu for keeping this beast online for so many years!

Question... is there still plans to migrate the forum to Xenforo? (or another platform)
