China adds 8,130 km of expressways to toll road network in 2017
Aug 26, 2018
Xinhua Excerpt

China added 8,130 km of expressways to its toll road network last year, an increase of 6.5 percent year on year, according to the Ministry of Transport.

The newly-added expressways put the country's total length of fee-collecting expressway at 132,638 km, or 81 percent of the toll roads in China, data from the ministry showed.

In 2017, 15,245 km of first- and second-class toll roads became toll-free, marking a decline of 33.5 percent year on year, according to the ministry.

The country's toll roads registered a deficit of 402.6 billion yuan (about 58.4 billion U.S. dollars) last year, down 2.8 percent year on year.

China is aiming to build and put 5,000 km of expressways into use this year.

G76 Xiarong Expressway

The oldest section of G76 in Fujian province is being expanded from four to eight lanes, they also address the substandard alignment of the original expressway, which opened to traffic in 2004. The Zhangzhou - Longyan section is being rebuilt, a portion of it opens this weekend or early next week.

G1 Jingha Expressway

The G1 Beijing - Harbin Expressway is a 1209 kilometer expressway to northeastern China. It was opened in stages between 1995 and 2001. The western half from Beijing to Shenyang was built with six lanes from the beginning, the northeastern half from Shenyang to Harbin was built with four lanes.

Many sections of G1 have been expanded from 2x2 to 2x4 lanes between Shenyang and Harbin. Construction is currently underway to expand the last sections in Jilin province and it has been announced that the remaining 70 kilometers in Heilongjiang province will start soon.

So that means there is another long stretch of eight lane expressway in China. Shenyang to Harbin is a good 500 kilometers of eight lane motorway.

Considering the Beijing-Shenyang section is 6 lanes through this means G1 will never drop below 6 lanes for its entire length! While I was following the 8 lane section of G1 I came across an U/C interchange near Siping. I thus found G1113 under construction between Meihekou and Siping and towards Shuangliao. Further North, on the section where widening is in progress (Changchun to the Heilongjiang border) G1015 is under construction extending both East and West of Fuyu. Ah, I miss those days of expressway construction hunting.

I believe the reason behind those 8 lane superexpressways is to avoid those long truck queues such as the ones seen in Germany, by providing 2 lanes in each direction for trucks and another 2 for cars. Anyway, they are already late in widening G4 South of the Henan/Hubei border and G30 East of Shangqiu.

The 375 kilometer section of G15 from Shenyang to Dalian was expanded to 2x4 lanes in 2004. It was the first eight lane expressway in China.

There are an increasing number of long-distance eight lane expressways in China, which is unheard of virtually anywhere else. Even in de U.S. and Europe there are almost no long stretches with eight lanes outside of urban areas.

G4 is almost entirely eight lane all the way from Beijing to Wuhan. That is 1160 kilometers. And G30 has long eight lane sections as well.

I see they have reused S18 for a new expressway from Huai'an to Binhai after the original one became G1516. On the other hand they left several numbers replaced by national ones unused, like S5 (G15W2, then renumbered G1521), S29 (G1516) or S38 (G42S, then renumbered G4221). I could make some tweaks to the numbering: I'd make that section of S1 near Yancheng part of S22, and then make S26 part of S1. Not to mention G4012 is clearly an extension of G4011, but that is another story.

G72 Quannan Expressway

I learned about another major expansion project in China, the eight lane expansion of G72 Quannan Expressway in Guangxi. It is a 249 kilometer expansion project between Liuzhou and Nanning. It includes a minor realignment near Liuzhou and a 28 kilometer rerouting at Laibin. It's planned to be completed by the end of 2018.

This expressway originally opened in 1999 as a four lane expressway.

30 years of expressways

The first expressway of China was inaugurated on 31 October 1988. The first expressway was the Hujia Expressway in Shanghai.

Jiang Zemin, secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, cut the ribbon for the opening ceremony.
