Summer in Malmö

Malmö is Sweden's third largest city (after Stockholm and Gothenburg) and together with Copenhagen, Denmark it forms the center of the Øresund Region.

Let's start with a couple of pictures from Copenhagen towards Malmö to give you an idea how close the two cities are.

When the weather is nice, you can see Malmö's skyline from Copenhagen. The 190 m. tall Turning Torso stands out, of course, but you can also see Saint Peter's Church.



The 8 km long Öresund Bridge forms part of the fixed link between Denmark and Sweden. Here it is seen from the Danish side.



Malmö central station receives around 45,000 visitors per day, which makes it the second most visited central station in Sweden. I like the fresh colors of the building.





Let's move down to Malmö's new development area, Västra Hamnen (The Western Harbor). Here is what the Öresund Bridge looks like from the Swedish side.



Most of the new buildings are pretty standard, nice, modern lowrise apartment buildings like these.



But they do have a big brother to watch over them!

Even though I had seen many pictures of the tower, I must say that it looked even more impressive in real life.



Back near the central station we find this old building, which has got an interesting tower.

Anyways, awesome pictures as usual. Theres nothing about Malmø that doesnt impress me. And of course, Turning Torso... The one, the only... You know i'm actually thinking about getting it as a tattoo..on my upper left arm (seriously... I want a tattoo but i cant think of anything, so my dad suggested i get the turning torso on my arm since i loved it so much, he was of course joking (since he hates skyscrapers) but i actually think its a good idea.. i think it would look awesome! uhh.. anyways, enough about my stupid tattoo, great pictures DenverDane!!

I'm looking forward to see the photos of Old Town, since they are kind of rare on this forum. Almost all pictures of Malmö nowadays portays Västra Hamnen and Turning Torso.

@staff: Thanks , I would like to have explored the Old Town more, but time didn't allow me... Anyway, here goes:


Let's go to Malmö's Old Town.

The 105 m. tall Saint Peter's Church is actually a sister church to The Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen, that is, they used to look the same, but a fire destroyed the one in CPH, so it was rebuilt with a different design. I prefer the old design.





A nice street in Malmö.



A look towards Stortorget (The Grand Square) from Frans Suellsgatan.



Stortorget (The Grand Square) is very impressive with fine old buildings. The black stage to the right was there because of the Malmö Festival.



A fine hotel.



On Stortorget we also find this statue of King Karl X Gustav. He was the one who forced the Danes to give up Scania to Sweden (bastard! ). He's looking towards Denmark.



Skomakeregatan (Shoemaker Street).



Lilla Torg (Little Square) is pretty close to Stortorget but the buildings surrounding it are much smaller.







I didn't stay long in Malmö, but I'm definitely going to be back! Still many places left to explore (some you have already seen in Nightsky's and staff's threads).

Nice pics, I think you have manage to capture TT from Copenhagen better than anyojne so far(my optical zoom is only 3x).

It would be very interesting to see the old design of the Copenhagen church and how tall it was.

@Staff: I didn't know about the new Subway either(only about the other one).

1. part: these modern buildings doesn`t look very average to me. They look quite stylish when comparing with many Nordic projects what I have seen
in this forum. 2. part: Old town of Malmö is nice, but there are many buildings with different style & height so it looks kinda messy.

That's actually a specific thing for Malmö and Copenhagen. Most buildings have the same amount of floors, but the buildings have different height. In for example Stockholm, most buildings in the inne city parts have the same height - more homogenic.

I couldn't find anything on the Internet, but then I remembered my picture of the model of Copenhagen as it looked in the year 1500, so I cut the church out of the picture, and here it is. I'm not sure how accurate it is, though. At that time it was called Saint Mary's Church:

Thanks for posting it. It is not exactly the design, but it reminds of Petrikyrkan in Malmö. The roof is different.

I think it is very alike, except for the tower! The four "mini-towers" around the spire are also different.

Btw - about Petri Church, this is how it looked like during the 1870s (don't know when the spire was built, but probably around 1880-1890)

@Atlantica: Thanks for posting the drawing, but the church actually used to have a spire before 1870 (a German made a drawing of Malmö in 1580 where it had the spire).. I have no idea why the design was changed, but the one in Copenhagen also changed from time to time (mostly because of devastating fires).
