#012 l Bank of China Tower l HONG KONG l 367m l 72fl

Bank of China Tower
Hongkong, China

HEIGHT: 367m/ 1,204 feet
FLOORS: 72 floors
COMPLETION: 1989
ARCHITECT: Pei Cobb Freed & Partners

Soaring 369 meters high, the Bank of China Tower is one of the world's tallest buildings. When commissioned to design the building, I.M. Pei wanted to create a structure that would represent the aspirations of the Chinese people yet also symbolize good will toward the British Colony. Original plans included an x-shaped cross-brace. However, in China the X shape is seen as a symbol of death. Instead, Pei opted to use less threatening diamond forms.

Another symbol used for this building is that of the bamboo plant, which represents revitalization and hope. The sectioned trunk of the Bank of China Building is inspired by the growth patterns of bamboo.

The four triangular shafts which form the building grow narrower as the building rises. These shafts support the weight of the building and eliminate the need for many internal vertical supports. Consequently, the Bank of China uses less steel than typical for a building its size.

The Bank of China Tower was the tallest building in Asia upon completion, until 1992, when Hong Kong's Central Plaza took the tile. The tower houses an observation deck on the 42nd floor which is open to the public.

Masterful, innovative and imposing. It is also utterly devoid of any depth...

9.5/10...Almost perfect.

It's a joke putting down anything below a 19 as an option! This skyscraper gets a 99999/2

Very unique, especially with the windows, and the slanting setbacks. 9.5/10

This is the building that actually started my whole fascination with skyscrapers and architecture. The first time I saw a picture of it I was stunned by its beauty. It is the best - my favourite building in the world. I think this building deserves /10, but the best I can do is give it a very enthusiastic 10/10!

I give it a 389251743892567234895748395782349573489573489563489456702398367716378450823905784567234408329137814690314567385643201646304630600436712486237462378457823056723467832640236104372 out of 10.

Anybody who gave it less than a 9 must really enjoy driving their Pontiac Aztek and wearing their stone-washed denim jean jacket...
