$70m go-ahead for city projects

ANNA VLACH, CIVIC REPORTER

September 05, 2006 12:15am

TWO multi-million dollar city building developments were approved by Adelaide City Council last night.
The council's Development Assessment Panel unanimously voted in favour of both applications.

The first one passed, the Mayfair Apartments, will be a $40 million five-storey residential and retail development on the corner of Hutt and Angas streets.

Karidis Corporation will develop the former Hutt Street Hospital site, which has been lying vacant since 2003. It will have 36 apartments, two commercial tenancies and a car park.

The second development, by the Samaras Group, is a $30 million 10-storey glass-fronted office complex on the corner of Gilles and King William streets at the former Repco site.

Facing King William St in front of a recently completed eight-storey car park, the environmentally-friendly building will have a 4-5 Greenstar rating.

Architect of both buildings, Rob Cheesman, said the King William St office complex would attract major tenants and give the precinct a boulevard character.

"It will be the first cab off the rank under the council's Development Assessment Panel's plans for inviting new buildings to King William St south," he said.

Mr Cheesman, who is a member of the Development Assessment Panel, excused himself from last night's meeting citing a conflict of interest.

Great to see Adelaide coming out of it's shell! Its really beggining to kick start and do some catch up time. Hopefully this will lead to taller towers and begin to see a nice skyline from the top of King William Street to the bottom end.

oh, taller than i first thought...40m is great for that end of town!

its length must cause the illusion that it is shorter than it actually is

Very nice indeed, as an ex South Aussie, I'd be very happy with that.
Better than half of the stuff they are building in Melbourne's Docklands at the moment.

When I read "10st" I thought that it must be some low and small building stuffed between 2 old buildings...

But that's really impressive. Very cool looking building. Very modern and European feel.

Adelaide doesn't have really impressive highrises, but it sure has many cool lowrises. I love it.

Its a looker.(if you can say that about a building)
Its imposing on the streetscape, lets hope it looks half as good in life as it does in renders.
