The Chicago Flag

As a native Chicagoan, I've always had a warm feeling towards our city's flag. At college, I even had one on my walls. All of my friends from other parts of the country/world thought this was rather odd.

Question is, is Chicago alone in this way, ie having a flag that virtually all of its citizens are aware of?

The St. Louis City flag is EVERYWHERE in this city.

www.mustrock.com sells cool patches too.

Chicago's flag is definitely one of the best city flags around. I love it.

Every major city is pretty saturated with its flag, if it has one. Same for the individual states.

So no, Chicago is not unique in that it takes citywide pride in its flag.

In Chicago, you see just as many city flags flying in the neighborhoods as you see American and other ethnic flags., and not just on city or gov. buildings. The flag of Chicago is really a symbol of our pride in this city, so much to a point that I put it on my back about 13 years ago.

I might have to go back to Chicago tattoo factory and add a few more skyscrapers

Whoops. I forgot to throw my beloved Naptown flag up:

Indy's flag just might be the simplest flag of any major American city. It is also similar to the city flag of Jackson, MS.

Symbolism

Stripes
The three white stripes of the flag represent, from top to bottom, the North, West and South sides of the city. The top blue stripe represents Lake Michigan and the North Branch of the Chicago River. The bottom blue stripe represents the South Branch of the Chicago River and the Great Canal.

Stars
The four red stars on the center white stripe, from left to right:

The first star stands for the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and is original to the 1917 design of the flag. Its six points represent religion, education, aesthetics, justice, beneficence, and civic pride.

The second star symbolizes the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, and is original to the 1917 design. Its six points stand for political entities Chicago belonged to: France 1693, Great Britain 1763, Virginia 1778, the Northwest Territory 1798, Indiana Territory 1802, and Illinois 1818.

The third star represents the Century of Progress Exposition (1933-1934), and was added in 1933. Its points refer to: the World's Third Largest City, Chicago's Latin Motto (Urbs in horto - City in a garden), Chicago's "I Will" Motto, Great Central Marketplace, Wonder City, Convention City.

The fourth star represents the Fort Dearborn Massacre of 1812. It was added to the flag in 1939. Its six points symbolize transportation, labor, commerce, finance, populousness, and salubrity.

The next star on the map in the future will represent the summer 2016 Chicago Olympics.

The municipal flag of Chicago consists of two blue horizontal stripes on a field of white, each stripe one-sixth the height of the full flag, and placed slightly less than one-sixth of the way from the top or bottom, respectively. Between the two blue stripes are four red, six-pointed stars arranged in a horizontal row.

In a review by the North American Vexillological Association of 150 American city flags, the Chicago city flag came in 2nd with a rating of 9.03 out of 10, behind only Washington, D.C.

Chicago's flag is by far, one of the most easily recognizable, that's for sure.

The flag of San Francisco is common around the city, especially around the downtown area.

Hawaii I believe is the only state without any city flag.

the California Republic flag, though for a state and not a ****, is also very recognizable. Same goes for Texas.
