Equities remain volatile on political uncertainty

LAHORE - Pakistan equities remained volatile as investors mulled the week’s biggest question facing the market: Will Pakistan be included in FATF's watchlist? Though market was rife with speculations that Pakistan will be put to ‘Grey’ list from Jun 2018 (Pakistan was previously in the list during 2012-2015), there was no official announcement on this matter in the ‘Outcomes of FATF Plenary meeting (Feb 21-23)’, concluded in Paris.

In an another development during the week, the Supreme Court ruled that an individual disqualified under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution can’t serve as head of a political party which bars former prime minister Nawaz Sharif from formally leading PML-N party.

Multinational companies: Pakistan aligns rules with OECD to curb tax evasion

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has aligned its legal framework with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in order to curb tax avoidance by multinational companies (MNCs) through shifting profits to tax-havens and claiming higher expenditures.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has recently made new amendments to the Income Tax Rules 2002, making them compatible with requirements of the OECD. The amendments follow a new legal provision that the federal government had added to the 2017-18 budget in May last year.

The government has also given some relaxation to the companies where the requirements were more stringent. By amending Rule 27G of the Income Tax Rules 2002, the FBR has withdrawn the condition of filing country-by-country report by the MNCs for tax year 2017. Now the companies will be required to file these reports for 2018.

Boosting Trade: SAARC CCI stresses collaboration

ISLAMABAD: South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) Chamber of Commerce and Industry President-elect Ruwan Edirisinghe has stressed the need to strengthen collaboration among Saarc member countries to boost trade and investment in the region and stave off chronic hostilities. Talking to Saarc Chamber Pak chapter Vice President Iftikhar Ali Malik by telephone, Edirisinghe said trade within these countries was less than 6%. An investment-friendly environment to promote trade in the region would be ensured if appropriate steps were taken to remove trade barriers and streamline customs procedures, he said, adding intra-regional trade in South Asia could nearly quadruple from the current $28 billion to over $100 billion.

To Address Civic Woes: ‘Private sector can develop new cities’

FAISALABAD: Unplanned expansion of major cities like Faisalabad and Lahore have created multiple civic, social and administrative problems, said Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) President Shabbir Hussain Chawla. Speaking at a meeting of the FCCI Standing Committee on Real Estate, he suggested that a new planned and systematic city should be developed between Lahore and Faisalabad, instead of expanding the existing cities. The FCCI president outlined the ‘Made in Faisalabad’ expo schedule and urged committee members to actively participate in the exhibition which was going to be held in Lahore’s Expo Centre on March 24-25.

Pakistan plans to hold Islamic trade fair

PESHAWAR (Staff Reporter): Pakistan will soon hold Islamic trade fair of Islamic countries, said chairman Council of OIC Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Naseemur Rehman. Chairing a meeting on Tuesday, he stressed the need for enhancing bilateral economic ties and trade relations between brotherly Islamic countries. The meeting was attended by Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries President Ghazanfar Bilor. The meeting discussed the agenda related to the single currency trade, strong linkages with Islamic development banks and Islamic trade fair in Pakistan. Naseem said the Muslim countries had enormous resources and potential to succeed, but the task was to transform the potential into real asset. He further stated that there was great need to promote integration among the Islamic Countries in the era of globalization and absence of unity among the OIC countries which is the biggest challenge in the present situation.

He said that single currency will eliminate transaction costs, which are linked to international financial operations and this will affect both: ordinary citizens who plan to spend money abroad and multinational corporations undertaking international transactions.
