Monterrey Industry

I think it would be great if we explain the reasons why Monterrey is considered the Industrial bunker of Mexico.

Monterrey is home of 4 of the Biggest Mexican Multinationals. Cemex, Alfa, Femsa and Vitro. The Big four has provided wealth to the metro area for almost or more than a Century and they always are involved in most of the urban developments of the city

Cemex.
Is the world's largest building materials supplier and third largest cement producer. CEMEX currently operates on 50 countries in four continents, (Argentina, Poland, Australia, USA, Phillipines, Egypt and so on) from with 66 cement plants, 2,000 ready-mix-concrete facilities, 400 quarries, 260 distribution centers and 80 marine terminals. It has almost 70,000 employees and counting.

Femsa.
Is the largest beverage company in Mexico and was originated as the Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma Brewery in 1890. Femsa also owns 53.7% of the world's second largest bottler of Coca Cola, Coca-Cola FEMSA, S.A. de C.V. ("KOF"), which operates in 9 countries covering the metropolitan area of Mexico City, southeast Mexico, Central America and South America. FEMSA Comercio operates OXXO, the largest convenience store chain in Latin America, as well as other smaller convenience stores called “deposits”.On December 20, 2007, Cascade Investments LLC, whose main partner is Bill Gates, announced it will invest 390 million dollars in FEMSA

Alfa
ALFA is a Mexican conglomerate comprised of four business groups: Alpek (petrochemicals), Nemak (aluminum auto components), Sigma (refrigerated food) and Alestra (telecommunications).

ALFA is the world’s leading manufacturer of high-tech aluminum engine heads and blocks. It is one of the world’s largest producers of PTA, a petrochemical product, and has an outstanding position in the market for other petrochemicals in Mexico. In addition, ALFA is the leader in the production of processed meats and cheese and one of the most important telecommunications service companies in Mexico. In 2007, ALFA reported revenues of $U.S. $96 billion, including foreign sales of U.S. $52 billion, and assets of U.S. $21 billion. Currently, ALFA has manufacturing operations in 17 countries and employs more than 50,000 people.

Vitro.
Vitro, S.A.B. de C.V. (BMV: VITRO A; NYSE: VTO) is one of the largest glass manufacturers in the world. Certainly is the most affected company (among these big 4) by the recent financial crisis, but we hope the current management will make a big return for Vitro.

These companies have settled the "business oriented" culture within the city. Their visionary owners also contributed for the educational development in the state. They created Monterrey Tech, and actively support the State University of Nuevo Leon. Today both of them are among the most reknowned Universities that every year provides qualified proffessionals to run their companies and all other companies merged as the result of the wealth created in the city in the past century.

Monterrey Fashion and Entertainment

Monterrey is also emerging as a cultural bunker supported by the recent public administrations. Paseo de Santa Lucía and the Forum de las Culturas was just the start of the race to became a cultural spot in the country.

Some local groups are very reknownde in Mexico and maybe in Latinamerica also, like rock bands Jumbo, Panda or Kinky.

Grupo Pesado and Celso Piña are another regional artists that truly represents the Tex-mex floklore and the hybrid roots of Monterrey.

For fashion lovers, Monterrey has great design spots and events as well.
