'Security checks at Hyd airport will take only 3 mins'
Sandhya Ravishankar / CNN-IBN

Hyderabad: Hyderbad’s GMR airport is up and running but not without its fair share of glitches.
The first is easy and cheap connectivity. There are a few options for getting to Shamshabad – you can take a taxi, GMR's radio taxis or GMR's aeroexpress buses. The cheapest option is, of course, the bus but even that costs Rs 95 per passenger one way.
This 30-kilometre ride is anything but smooth with several ruts in the road and traffic jams at various points. Going to the airport by taxi is an expensive proposition.
But GMR's aesthetics are indeed world class.
Spread over 5,500 acres and built at a cost of Rs 2,500 crores, this airport has 130 check-in counters to facilitate a super-fast entry.
In addition to that, instead of waiting until your baggage is screened, all you have to do is check it in. It passes through four levels of checks and if there is a security issue, your baggage will be set aside and your name called to remove the hazardous material. The end result is that there are no queues for check-in or the security check.
"It takes only about three minutes for the entire process to get over. Allow for a bit more and one can easily be at the airport 15 minutes before take-off and still make it comfortably in time,” said GMR’s VP (Corporate Planning and Risk Management) A Viswanath.
The processes are indeed quick and trouble-free, but if you get hungry in the airport, you would have to be prepared to shell out Rs 53 for a cup of coffee, which is the cheapest thing on the menu.
The steep prices are not just restricted to the food. Duty-free prices are 60 per cent more expensive than in other airports in the country.
Another problem is that there is only one help desk, which is not too much help.
On the brighter side, however, GMR officials say there will be minimum delays in the airport.
In the second phase of construction, GMR will also offer a brand new runway along with a second passenger terminal building, all within two years.

New Hyderabad airport has handled 93,000 passengers

New Hyderabad airport has handled 93,000 passengers
March 28th, 2008

SOURCE: http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/..._10032399.html

Hyderabad, March 28 (IANS) The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad, which began its operations early Sunday, has handled 93,000 passengers in the past five days. The new airport, with world-class facilities, handled around 15,000 international and 78,000 domestic passengers till March 27. “Thus the airport is handling an average of 18,500 passengers per day,” said a statement by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) here Friday.

The total air traffic movement during the period was around 1,500. The air traffic movement is defined as one-round movement of an aircraft - landing and taking off.

“The performance of check-in, baggage handling and fuel farm systems has been steadily improving over the last five days,” said the statement, which came amid reports in a section of media about the lack of proper facilities and poor connectivity.

The first greenfield airport in public-private partnership has been built at a cost of Rs.25 billion ($627.8 million) at Shamshabad, about 30 km from the city. The old airport was in the heart of the city.

It claimed that the international pilot community has appreciated the runway and air traffic control systems installed at the new airport.

On connectivity to the new airport, it said the operation of 30 AC buses from four locations in the city is getting a positive response from the public.

“GHIAL is working with the operator to increase both the number of buses and locations in the coming days to improve travel convenience to the airport for travellers.”

Two other operators are also operating 700 radio taxis, which are charging a flat rate of Rs 15 per km.

Gr8. This boils down to roughly 7 million per annum. I would hope to see new flights (to new destinations) starting operations from Hyderabad soon.

Very very impressive this one. 6 lanes & proper sidewalk with raling as well. This is truly international quality. Very impressive.

if Hyd outskirts start getting this kind of roads all over, metro will only be an addition.

The typical tabloid Media. Lack of connectivity & all that. . Never once did they showed the present road to & around Shamshabad Airport. All you here is PVNR Expressway is not ready. But never do they show whats "Ready". So much nonsense of New Airport being in the jungle away from the civilization till Expressway is finished.

Road to Airport

Gosh I love the HIAL interior roof, very cool very interesting.

The only thing depressing about the traffic on roads is the Sonia-Manio Gandhi country inspired 3-wheeler auto, waiting for the day that the Tata Nano wipes out the ugly unstable underpowered junk called the bajaj 3 wheeler.

Obverving the Baggage Carousel - it look quite ergonomic and one doesnt have to reach too far for bags placed towards the top of the conveyor...

Also the Aeroexpress looks similar in capacity luggage and passenger as the Vayu Vajras coz an entire side of the bus has space for bags instead of seats. I prefer the layout of Vayu Vajya in this case coz it is eask to keep an eye on the bags if all the passengers sit at the rear and there are 2 levels for bag placement...

The Aeroexpress does look more plush with better seats and over head bins not to mention underfloor stowage too...

nice pics barrykul...
btw this is for barrykul and hindustani both... its recommanded that you post the pics on imageshack or photobucket and then hotlink here instead hotlinking them directly from flickr. ofcourse you need to give proper credits too... link for the above pics i would write "Jagan @ flickr.com" instead of just "jagan"..
just suggestion to avoid future problems...
cheers

I hope everybody noticed that work is still going on around and within the terminal building. As discussed in the thread yesterday, they are replacing those plastic chairs in the Airport village area with benches which are being arranged systematically.
I think we need to wait for a month (atleast) before everything falls into place.
But still, this is a great looking Airport and people will start liking it more as they get used to the new facilities.
