Berlin: Dom

Berlin "Dom" ( by Julius Raschdorff, 1894-1905), seen form the Spree, before the destructions of WW.II. The beautiful neo-Baroque bridge has disappeared too.

ca. 1900 http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:B...rliner_Dom.jpg

Today, after simplified reconstruction

Dresden (Sachsen): Thormeyer-Zeichnung und Casanova-Grab

The Neoclassical architect Gottlob Friedrich Thormeyer was also a painter and as a painter a disciple of Giovanni Battista Casanova, the younger brother of the famous Giacomo Casanova.
Here an handcoloured engraving after a Thormeyer drawing of Dresden, ca. 1810.

http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?...20070424153929

In 1764 Giovanni Battista Casanova (1730-95), a very good and well respected painter, was appointed professor in Dresden academy.
Here his grave monument on the Old Catholic Graveyard in Dresden-Friedrichstadt by the Neoclassical court sculptor Franz Pettrich: Iohann Baptist Casanova.

Dresden (Sachsen): Leipziger Tor und Treppe hinauf zur Brühlschen Terrasse

The Leipzig Gate in Dresden by Gottlob Friedrich Thormeyer, 1827-29.
Only one of the previously two gatehouses is still existing.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fileresden_Akzisehaus_Palaisplatz_2.jpg

Another work of Thormeyer is the stairway up to the Brühl Terrace in Dresden, 1814.

In this old photography (1880) you can still see the Brühl Palace (1737-53 by Johann Christoph Knöffel) behind the trees, demolished 1900 for a Paul Wallot building.
The Brühl Terrace was the garden terrace of this palace.

What's that? A bunker maybe? No! It's the Schwerbelastungskörper
It was built by Dyckerhoff & Widmann AG in 1941 for 400.000 Reichsmarks to study the feasibility of constructing large buildings such on the sandy ground in the area, in preparation for the planned construction nearby of a massive Triumphal Arch

What was the outcome of this test? Could that Arch have been build?

Statically yes, but not without special preparation of the soil.
Politically no, because a triumphal arch without a triumph has lost its foundation.

Here the new town centre of Berlin with Hitler's and Speer's central Avenue of Victory between the South Station and the huge domed People's Hall.
You can see also the triumphal arch (120 m high and 170 m broad), designed by Hitler himself (1925), modified by Speer (1939).

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwerb...ngsk%C3%B6rper

sorry it is in german, but english wikipedia doesent talk about this and i am too lazy to translate.

but i found this in english wiki

"If the structure were to sink less than 6 cm (2.5 inches), the soil would be deemed sound enough to build Hitler's planned structures of Welthauptstadt Germania, notably the Volkshalle. It sank 18 cm (7 inches) after three years, but Hitler disregarded the findings.[1]"

But back to that german text. What is Totlast?? i know what tot and last means, but totlast? How can "last" be dead
