Qatar to set up sports museum

QATAR will set up a sports museum following the signing of an agreement by the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) with a Spanish public enterprise yesterday.

Addressing reporters, QOC secretary-general Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrehman al-Thani said The Qatar Sports Museum would be located at the Khalifa Stadium which comes under the umbrella of the Aspire Zone facility.

The Qatar Sports Museum is being set up as part of an initiative of the QOC, Qatar Museum Authority (QMA) and the Aspire Zone.

“We will be availing of the expertise of architects of the Barcelona Olympic Museum for this project and we expect the museum to be ready before January 2011,” said the QOC secretary-general.

“We have chosen the Aspire Zone as the venue for setting up the museum as the facility already attracts a lot of visitors. The museum once ready will add value to the existing facility and will help in promoting sports tourism in Qatar,” he said.

In his address, Ferran Ferrer, director of Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (BSM), the Spanish company entrusted with the project, said it was apt that Qatar housed a sports museum as it is now the sports hub of the region hosting prestigious tennis tournaments, Qatar Masters golf, MotoGP and also because it is an applicant city for the 2016 Olympic Games.

“Not all countries which have hosted the Olympic Games have set up a museum. Most of these cities only have facilities to house materials related to the event so I am glad that Qatar has taken the lead in this aspect,” he said.

“I am also extremely happy with Aspire Zone being chosen as the venue for setting up the museum as it has already earned praise all over the world for its state-of-the-art facilities.

“The Qatar Sports Museum will be unique and will have exhibits relating to sport worldwide. The museum will have works of art which will be interactive and will also educate the visitors on various aspects of sport,” he added.

QMA Chief Executive Officer Abdullah al-Najjar, Ignasi Cardelus Fontdevila, deputy mayor of the Barcelona City Council and Aspire Zone official Hilal al-Kuwari were also present.

Khalifa stadium ???? how come ! or is it being built on its own (away from the stadium) maybe in the stadium ? ssince the stadium will be half rebuilt starting 2009 and ending in 2011 which happens to be the museum's deadline ?

So it has to be built along side an expansion project of khalifa stadium that was originally designed for the 2017 IAAF bid... Doha now is bidding for 2019 IAAF. The extension as i remember will push the number of spectators from 50,000 to 70,000
