A 34-year-old man was injured and is lucky to be alive after a massive tree fell across a busy Sydney CBD road and footpath on Saturday evening, miraculously missing dozens of other pedestrians and resulting in the closure of York Street.

The 18-metre tall, 22-metre wide tree was assessed by experts just an hour before falling after reports the tree had started to "lean over", a City of Sydney council spokeswoman said.

About 6.15pm, NSW Ambulance received a call about the tree falling at the corner of York and Margaret streets at Wynyard.

"We have got one patient who got a glancing blow and we are treating him for a potentially fractured scapular or shoulder blade," NSW Ambulance inspector Giles Buchanan said, estimating the tree weighed "thousands of kilograms".

"He is extremely lucky to be alive," Inspector Buchanan said. "Half a step forward and he could have been in a very different situation and he may not have survived."
This may be a similar risk to that which affected dozens of trees in Hyde Park until they started to be removed a number of years ago. If so it's a good thing they did start removing them, imagine if this was happening all over the city:

Trees are like all plants and have a lifespan.

Once it's up they have to go.

They Hyde Park figs were noted 40 years ago as being in imminent need of removal. Its just that the internet never existed back then and you'd have to trawl through archival news from the Daily Mirror and The Sun newspapers

Some London planes in central London streets are 230 years old. Some planes in Sydney are at least 100. Those planted in Macquarie St in 1987 are falling victim to street "upgrades" long before they reach maturity.

big central core for this looks to be 4-5 levels above ground now, with black panels for core box going up around the top. flatbed trucks of long reinforcing rods being unloaded today, hopefully means big floor slabs not far behind.

added to say i saw this from across Carrington st side, not sure what it looks like from street level George st side.

The old Shell symbol on the parapet used to be quite a landmark as you headed into town across the Bridge.
