Patarei Prison, Tallinn.

We've visited Tallinn last summer and stayed in a flat near the former Sovjet-prison Patarei. On request () I feel free to post the pics here too.

Quote:
Patarei jail is not a regular museum. It’s old, noir and moist. Not very pleasant place to be for years and years and years… You have good opportunity to peek into the cells and many other rooms of that huge fortress.
Patarei is unique and grim remnant from the past. USSR still exists between these walls. You can see history in every part of that building. Old documents and newspapers, posters of long forgotten movies and dead plants are just short list.

It might not be very ethical to take visitors to the places like hanging room. But at least it makes people think about the horror of our past. It also makes them feel good about their/our freedom

Nice pics of a really grim place. I've been there myself few times (not as a inmate though ) Maybe,as a native,I should throw in a few facts...

Quote:
Patarei prison was built in 1800s as a naval fortress with three gun batteries. Hence the name - Patarei (estonian) > battery (english). However it gained infamy as a prison. Its was used as a prison by Imperial Russia (while it still was a fortress),first Estonian Republic, nazis,Soviet Union and current Estonian Republic (it was closed due to highly unsanitary conditions) I'd say,in Estonia it was as notorious as Krestõ (Kresty in english) prison was in Saint Petersburg,Russia (google for more, both were part of Gulag system)

Yes, nice pics from that place indeed; they will demolish that building or they will restored to somekind museum?

it's under heritage protection. it will eventually be renovated but it's hard to imagine a use for it.

/\ Perhaps a hostel? They've done it with the långholmen prison here in Stockholm. The cells are turned into rooms.
