Some of the High Bridge traders

IT WAS once dubbed Newcastle’s Carnaby Street, and now it is hoped TV’s Queen of Shops, Mary Portas, can make High Bridge swing again. Store owners have banded together to form the High Bridge Tenants’ Association in a bid to rejuvenate the once bustling street, and the group is hoping the High Bridge Quarter will be chosen to be one of the 12 ‘Portas pilots’ across the country, which will share £1m and receive expert advice from the retail guru. Elaine Sinclair, chairwoman of the association and owner of Freefall, said: “When I opened my shop nearly four years ago, I put a whole load of marketing points to (business improvement organisation) NE1 because I could see there were a lot of things we could do to improve footfall.” However, it was not until six months ago that tenants in High Bridge – so named because it crossed Lort Burn which runs below adjoining Grey Street – decided to form the association to revive the area’s glory days of the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

More on this and other happenings - some of which *have* been talked about here already - at http://www.soultsretailview.co.uk/20...ments-roundup/.

What size is the temporary store and how does that compare to the current one? I have the 'pleasure' of using the current one every week and it's good that it has a dcent selection and I can walk there, certainly more choice than the Newcastle city centre supermarkets I used to use.

I fear I may have to start using online shopping if the temporary one is much smaller.

It will be very much smaller, I'm afraid - I never went in when it was Kwik Save, but I think it will basically be a Tesco Express in terms of size.

This has been covered a few times in Gateshead Development - see #624 for picture showing front elevation of building

This is plan layout from original application http://public.gateshead.gov.uk/onlin...=K0RAJRHK03P00 on Gateshead Planning Portal

Not to scale

.
The construction of MetroOasis and the planned Monument Mall Refurbishment Retail Projects

New ‘Project Threads’ have been set up to follow the construction of each of the above.

Please post any updates about the above two subjects on the new individual project threads from now on, rather than on here.

Thanks.

G Star have shut down in Sheffield and Manchester recently too so isn't a great surprise.

Not a surprise, never saw anyone in the place and was very expensive. Eldon Square could do with giving the entrance a revamp while they have the opportunity, maybe making it double height and getting rid of the dated brown glass.

I remember that Silverscreen (in there before G-Star Raw) had quite a large upstairs shopfloor too - probably double or three times the size of the ground floor - presumably stretching out over the entrance to the mall. It seemed to be closed off once G-Star moved in, however.

BHS now has it's scaffolding down, their is no matt black finish on the sign though, just a cheap horrible grey plastic sign surround.

Also, the old Tucci store is going to be run by the same company that run Start Fitness. There's signs in the window advertising "Start Football"

I wish them luck. Their bike shop opposite is good, and I used to get some rugby stuff from Start Fitness. As far as sports shops go I much prefer them to Sports Direct, JJB/DW etc.

Looks pretty good. Nice modern unit. Will be interesting to see how it looks alongside Primark.
