It is quite some statement but it’s a claim that should rightfully go to Sir John Priestman, according to Philip Curtis of the Sunderland Antiquarian Society. AND “Perhaps it is the fact that Sir John died in 1941 and the years that followed were taken up with war. “Consequently there was no demand for any permanent acknowledgment of Sir John’s generosity to the town and, with the passing of the years, generations of Wearsiders most probably had little or no knowledge of the fantastic work Sir John did for Sunderland.  Yes reading this,---and Sir John Priestly did some marvellous things for Sunderland,--- and personally I think there should be more recognition of him,------now regarding St Andrews Church,---this is a lovely building,--and is also known as----"the Cathedral of Arts and Crafts movement"---this is due to the interior having works by William Morris and others,----btw Ken,---when you do visit the Church,---have a look at the painted ceiling,--it is beautiful,----cheers,--and thanks for the photos. |

In earlier posts on this thread I covered the construction of the external visual footprint of the original monastery foundations complete with a footpath that has a timeline of Benedict Biscop's life but never managed to see the interior of the St Peter's Church, Sunderland
On a warm and sunny day on Friday 20/09/19 went out and about in the Sunderland area on using metro and "shanks pony" to visit Heritage Open Days 2019, including:- https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/...uth-sunderland St Peter’s Church, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland St. Peters Vicarage, St. Peters Way, Sunderland, Tyne & Wear, SR6 0DY Visitors can explore over 1300 years of history in the Monstery founded by Benedict Biscop in 674AD and see the doorway The Venerable Bede entered as a child to start his monastic life. Walk in the footsteps of Saints and enjoy a historical tour. Guided tours to discover the history of St Peter's and learn about the history of the Abbots of Wearmouth Monastery. The west wall has been there since the foundation in 674AD and if stones could speak it would be able to talk of the many events in history it has witnessed. The oldest surviving complete Latin bible left here in 716AD known as the Codex Amiatinus and a copy of the original is on display. In 2016 a Children's Bible was produced by all schools in Sunderland and some Jarrow schools on the Codex Amiatinus' 1300th Anniversary, this is also on display. St Peter's Church, an Anglo Saxon church which is twinned with St Paul's in Jarrow as the Wearmouth/Jarrow Monastery has attracted visitors from around the world to see one of the birth places of early Christianity. There is a monastic garden to explore complete with a beehive with a viewing area to watch the bees work. The grounds include an award winning visual footprint of the original monastery foundations complete with a footpath that has a timeline of Benedict Biscop's life and his creation of the monastery. The Bakehouse to the rear of the building has twelve stained glass windows showing the seasons ands references to The Venerable Bede. Founded in Saxon times during the great age of Northumbria 'Celtic' Christianity. In the 8th and 9th centuries the monastery here was one of the greatest in England and influenced much of England and parts of Europe too. It was in Monkwearmouth St Peter's monastery the St Bede began his monastic life. The Anglo-Saxon Wearmouth monastery flourished for two hundred years after its foundation in AD 674 by St Biscop as a highly significant important centre of Christian learning and culture, including the production of religious manuscripts, the first stained glass and artwork decorating the church walls. Seven years later in AD 681 Bishop Biscop founded the church and monastery at Jarrow.
