Henning Larsen projects in Reykjavik:

Reykjavik Concert and Congress Centre.
The design gathers inspiration from the northern lights and the dramatic Icelandic nature.
Henning Larsens Tegnestue, in collaboration with the icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, has been awarded 1st prize in the International competition for a new Concert and Congress Centre.

Situated in Reykjavik on the boundary between the land and the sea, the building will stand out like a radiant sculpture, reflecting the sky, the harbour space, and the vibrant life of the city.
The facades, designed by Icelandic Olafur Eliasson, are a crystalline lattice of glass and steel. The glass prisms capture and reflect the light, mirroring the day and the seasons like “a calendar of light”.

The balconies in the main foyer offer a spectacular view over the centre of Reykjavik, the Esja mountain, and the glacier at Snæfells Jøkull.

The Concert and Congress Centre is part of the Masterplan for the Reykjavik harbor area that includes a five-star hotel and wellness centre, a fine arts academy, a bank domicile, a cinema, a new urban plaza and shopping street as well as a number of residential and commercial buildings along the fiord. The Masterplan will expand Reykjavik’s centre with a total of 85,000 square meters.

New university assignment
Henning Larsen Architects has been given the assignment to design Reykjavik’s new university, which bring together the existing functions in one campus area. The vision is to strengthen Reykjavik’s identity as a vibrant and supreme centre for education – attracting students and researchers from all over the world.

The proposal has been developed in close cooperation with the Icelandic Architect Arkis and landscape architect Landmotun. According to the jury’s report, it is ‘the delicate structures and their harmony with the surroundings, which places the proposal in a league of its own’.

Landspitali Reykjavik -University Hospital
The team comprised of HLT A/S, Creo Arkitekter A/S, Lohfert & Lohfert AS, Birch & Krogboe A/S and the Icelandic Batteriid Arkitektar was awarded 2nd prize in the international competition for an extension of the University Hospital in Reykjavik.
In the proposal the existing University Hospital is extended with an innovative integration of the patient and staff environment and the research and educational environment.
The section for inpatients is placed on the top floors of the building facing the spectacular Icelandic scenery. The entry for the outpatients is through a big inner street orientated towards the inner courtyards. Furthermore, all treatment and therapy sections are placed at this level. On the floors in between these functions the research and educational departments are placed, thus contributing to an inspiring hospital environment with optimum conditions for the research and treatment departments to share knowledge and experience.

Gross floor area: 170.000 m2

Yep, we needed one as we have a construction and development thread for all other countries in the subforum. Much is going on in Iceland as well.

Iceland MotoPark

The main designer is Marko Bowen who has designed courses in Dubai and is working on renevating the Silverstone course. Bowen
says the main objective of the Iceland Moto Park is to increase tourism into the country.

The project will include a hotel, restaurtants, cinemas, night clubs, health clubs, conference halls. The looks of all buildings will
have references to Formula 1 cars. “I see the potential of organizing major auto tournaments on the course in the future,” said
Bowen. Around the course a urban area of around 5 - 8.000 people is planned. The project will be built in stages, with
construction star in the end of 2006. The 370 hectare large project will be built near the city of Keflavík, just south of the
capital of Iceland, Reykjavik.

The course will not be eligable for F1 racing but it will be eligable for A1 racing in the future. The motorsport element of the
development incorporates an FIA homologated Category 2 race circuit of 4.2km, running in an anti-clockwise direction, which,
using link sections, can simultaneously operate two shorter club racing circuits of 2.1km and 2.2km in length. A range of
road safety driver training facilities are also planned, along with an FIA sanctioned quarter-mile drag strip, 1.2km kart circuit
and selection of motocross and off-road activities.

WOW! Iceland is booming! Are we all sure we're talking about the same under-populated island?

Anyways this is a great thread! We really needed it! Looks like Iceland and the 0,3 million that lives there, soon are going to have more high-rises than Norway with this speed! Love the Consert/congress-center!

This is a vague picture of the 2 towers that are now being constructed in Kopavogur. There was in the news today that there are plans to build a 28 storey high tower in the area also. A 23 storey high tower is also on the agenda. So this could be a little cluster of towers.
