Yeah it's certainly never been the nicest building to look at but it's the history that bothers me, and like you say Pablo, the replacement is soul destroying.

Anyway, based on the render I assume that the frontages will sweep around on to Dovercliffe Road, where the side of the cinema currently is?

Upsetting the locals I see. I completely understand the logic of doing sensitive and potentially dangerous demolition on a Sunday morning as it's a main shopping street and it will be much quieter in terms of pedestrians walking near to the site.

As for starting at 6am on Sunday morning, I think a letter-drop / public consultation exercise would have been a good idea to tell people that there would be some disturbance for one day to allow the demolition of the high walls next to the footpath. Not everyone would like it but at least people know what's going on.

Let's be honest, this really isn't that good. What is with the lack of windows? I'm assuming that curved corner, being at the front of the shop, will be part of the salesfloor, and not a back of house area, so would it have killed them to put a window in it? Ditto the three vertical sections alongside -

Rather lacklustre attempts at mimicking the art deco features of the building lost for this -

The store has been open for about a week now -

From people I've spoken to who've been in, they say it's really nothing special. Despite its size, it offers little beyond your average Home & Bargain. It does have a small bakery section and a self-serve coffee machine, but it lacks the extra ranges some newer openings have had like a chilled and frozen section, like the one on Hanover Street. With the iffy parking situation around the store, the consensus from those I spoke to was that it's fine for those that live around there, but for everyone else it's not worth going out of your way for.
