‘I’m just a vain little girl’ sobs China’s femme fatale Guo Meimei

The Chinese femme fatale at the centre of a scandal combining high-stakes poker, sex-for-cash assignations and the Chinese Red Cross Society has appeared on state television to issue a tearful and abject apology.

The broadcast, in which Guo Meimei, 23, appeared in orange prison overalls, had echoes of the humiliating Mao-era self-confessions. The ordeal appeared to leave her broken: “I have the vain mindset of a little girl,” she concluded, sobbing into her hands and begging forgiveness from the nation.

The highly unusual confession from Ms Guo — a grasping professional mistress famous for flaunting her Maserati and glittering chattels on the internet — ended a police investigation into illegal betting circles operating during the Brazil World Cup.

That investigation, together with a TV documentary by China’s state broadcaster, has exposed a lurid whirl of gangsters, gambling addiction and a system in which Ms Guo allowed herself to be hired out to wealthy businessmen as a £30,000-a-night prostitute.

Her money-making schemes stretched beyond the bedroom, however. Ms Guo, who once claimed to have poker debts of £26 million in an effort to boost her internet profile after a few months out of the limelight, appears to have been drawn to the profits of illicit gambling.

She and her boyfriend — a professional poker-player — allegedly attempted to establish an illegal casino in Beijing, for which she now faces the prospect of a criminal conviction.

But at the heart of Ms Guo’s infamy — and the reason she is so widely reviled — is the massive dent she has left in the finances of one of China’s oldest charitable organisations. In one of her earliest appearances on the internet three years ago, Ms Guo paraded her sports car, handbags and jewellery while claiming, entirely falsely, to work as the general manager for a subsidiary of the Red Cross Society of China.

The denials followed quickly, but the damage was done: millions of Chinese did not like or trust Ms Guo, but nor were they prepared to give the Red Cross Society the benefit of the doubt. Donations plunged, and have only tentatively begun to recover. The Red Cross Society has implored potential donors to “forget about Guo Meimei” in a campaign to restore its fortunes.

Despite the torrid scandal and flimsiness of Ms Guo’s claim to celebrity, the order to televise her confession, sources at the state broadcaster told The Times, came from senior ranks of the Communist party.

Some are convinced that this was chiefly an effort to resuscitate the reputation of the Red Cross. But many suspect that Ms Guo’s self-declared fraudulence and ostentatious extravagance are being used by the administration of President Xi to decry what went on in under his predecessor, Hu Jintao, and highlight the success of his anti-corruption and austerity programs.

Another theory was that Ms Guo’s colourful downfall was being used to distract from current uncomfortable issues. Despite President Xi’s image as a strongman, China’s Xinjiang region appears to be slipping beyond Beijing’s control. And in Jiangsu province, a massive factory explosion over the weekend left more than 75 dead, raising questions about safety inspections.

In some sense she is right. She is very typical among some material girls. There's a couple of Guo MeiMeis living in my apartment complex. She destroyed China Red Cross Organization with bare hand!

Did Guo Meimei actually tell anything bad about Red Cross?

I understand that her boyfriend, a rich private businessman not a corrupt official, actually did donate a lot of money to Red Cross. And also supported her with a lot of money.

So what is wrong about a bored er nai (her boyfriend must spend a lot of time earning the money he is blowing on her and Red Cross, and some on his first wife and children) doing something charitable with her free time?

The relationship with her and the red cross is still murky. What we do know is the organization she is involved is not the real red cross, but uses the red cross name and allowed to do so by the local government.

Beautiful woman should be as smart as Guo Meimei but not as clumsy as her.

Tend your body well, dress beautifully and go find rich boyfriend!

And don't hear any complaints from the ugly-poor-fat men around you, nor from jealous women below you.
