In short, everything in Taiwan is about 4-6 times more expensive (with the exception of electronics and airfare since these products and services have costs that are high regardless of the economic performance of the country)

Taiwan's GDP per capita, computed by Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) is indeed 4.5 times more than China's (26700 vs 6200 USD).
However, Taiwan's GDP per capita, computed by nominal exchange rate is actually 10.5 times more than China's (13450 vs 1300 USD).

The above comparisons shows that Taiwanese absolute income is 10.5 times as Chinese, but since consumer prices are much more expensive in Taiwan, Taiwanese only enjoy 4.5 times more income than Chinese.

Note that Hong Kong is also pretty much similar to Taiwan.
Now it is 1703 USD,in Shanghai and Hangzhou,GDP per capital had passed 5000 USD.It is said that Shenzhen will surpassed 10000 USD in 2008.
I noticed that eating is much more expensive in Taiwan than in Hong Kong for just normal everyday food. I'm not sure about foodstuffs prices in, say, supermarkets.

Housing costs are abnormally high, enough to force HK onto the list of world's most expensive cities for living cost, even taking the first spot a few times.

This cost disparity is reflected in the GDP per capita, which is US 38,000 PPP and 27,000 nominal.

I am anxious for Chinese cities' GDP to surpass 10,000.

Haha, I know it's true that cities like Shanhai and Shenzhen in China have much higher income and better quality of life than other parts of the country. However, we are talking about averages of the whole country. Taiwan is a country where income disparity is not so obvious between urban and rural areas, consumer prices are also pretty much the same across cities and countrysides.
It is kind of ironic that there are a few extremely rich people in "communists" China, but a whole crowd of people starving, earning much less than the national average.

p.s. your numbers are probably quoted from Chinese government and press, which I doubt if it's reliable (not that I don't think it's now higher than I reported , but definitely not that high).
Middle class population in China has surpassed 200 million. The government's economic reform has lifted 400 million people out of starvation in the past two decades. China should now promote sustainable business policy and promote entrepreneurship while cracking down on regional govt. corruption so that business can flourish. China must also reform its education system to inject better moral standards into the poorer areas.

It will still be a while before the average Chinese can afford a decent lifestyle, but we should remember that removing 400 million people from destitution is quite different from bringing wealth to the Taiwanese workforce of 15 million. Both happened in the span of 2-3 decades.

Also important is that China's development started from scratch after the Cultural Revolution completely destroyed the entire country's economy and education system. China is now rising from black ashes.
Cheaper than Hong Kong and Japan
Resemble to Singapore and North America cities
and
compared with Bangkok and SEA countries that expensive than ever :D

Shanghai and Shenzhen area are as large as Taiwan, population is also as large as Taiwan,so it is right. We should compare with same condition, many poor provinces' traffic is very hard, far from sea, can't compare.

二十萬加元在加拿大可以買到一處不錯的House(一百平米以上)。

Maybe he is talking about PPP when comparing to Singapore/North America.

I doubt.
Taiwan's land area is around 36000 km square. Shanghai on the other hand is around 6000 km square, which is 1/6 of Taiwan.
The population of Taiwan is approaching 23 million, while shanghai metropolitan's population is 17 million (10 million within the city limit), which is 3/4 of Taiwan's.

I don't think the CPI in Taiwan is on par with that of Singapore or North America. When you compare GDP/capita of the three places, Taiwan's figure is significantly lower than the other two; however, when you compare PPP/capita of the three places, Taiwan's figure is similar to that of Singapore, and 80% of the Canadian figure. Having said that means Taiwan's CPI should be much lower than the CPIs in Singapore and North America, but a typical Taiwanese has similar amount of economic activities as a typical singaporean.
That's why when we compare PPP/ capita, Taiwan's figure has that huge jump ahead.

One more point, the price level across tha island is not constant. That means products and services are usually more expensive in Taipei than in, let's say, Pentung. So while the price level in Taiwan is lower than that in the city of Singapore, the price level in Taipei city is probably comparable to Singapore city or North American cities.
The costs for accommodation in Taipei are usually much higher than those in typical North American cities. With the same amount of money, you can probably buy a 3-storey big house with 2 yards and garages in a normal North American city, but you can only buy a medium sized apartment suite in the city of Taipei.

That was the case for my family, and many others whom we know, when we moved to the U.S.
