Ms Chen Po Chu sits for Madame Tussauds Hong Kong

Acclaimed movie star and stage great, Ms Connie Chen Po Chu is to be immortalized in wax at the all-new Madame Tussauds Hong Kong scheduled to reopen in May 2006.

A captivating star since early childhood, Ms. Chen was known for her impeccable Chinese opera performances before entering the movie industry in 1956. Throughout the 1960’s she made over 200 movies and was known as the ‘fan’s princess,’ a diva equally at home on stage or screen.

In 1999, Ms. Chen came out of retirement to star in ‘A Sentimental Journey’, which still holds the record in Hong Kong for the most number of sold-out performances. Later this year, Ms. Chen, together with the renowned team that created ‘A Sentimental Journey’, will re-unite for ‘Only You’, a vibrant musical created by Emperor Stage.

During a sitting for her wax figure held at the Island Shangri-La Hotel Hong Kong on Wednesday, Ms. Chen said, “This is a very exciting moment for me to be here today. I am fascinated by the detail and effort required to ensure my wax figure will be as true to life as possible. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing the finished figure at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong.”

Conducted by an experienced team from Madame Tussauds London, the sitting is the first step in creating a wax figure. During the sitting, detailed measurements and hundreds of photos were taken which the talented Madame Tussauds sculptors will use to create a realistic wax figure. Ms. Chen’s hair, eyes and teeth were also colourmatched to ensure an incredible likeness.

Fans will be able to visit Ms. Chen’s wax figure in the World Premiere room at the all new Madame Tussauds Hong Kong. Standing alongside Hollywood stars Jodie Foster and Andy Lau, Ms Chen’s figure will be staged in a classic Chinese setting and guests will be invited to photograph themselves ‘on stage’ alongside Ms Chen.

Kelly Mak, Head of Marketing & Customer Services of Madame Tussauds Hong Kong said, “It is not often that we have the pleasure of welcoming a ‘living legend’ to Madame Tussauds Hong Kong and we are most honoured that Ms Chen has accepted our invitation to be immortalized as a wax figure. Ms. Chen has a large base of loyal fans and we are certain that they will be delighted to “meet” her at The Peak.”

Korean actor Bae Yong Jun will join the legends of the silver screen when he makes his first appearance at the new look Madame Tussauds in Hong Kong scheduled to re-open at The Peak in Summer 2006. Bae is the first Korean star to be honored with a Madame Tussauds wax figure anywhere in the world.

Known for his stylish acting, Bae achieved international fame in 2002 when the television drama “Winter Sonata” was broadcast throughout Asia, the Middle East area and even as far as North and South America.

“Winter Sonata” dramatically increased Bae’s profile in Japan where up to 80% of the country watched the show and his scarf wearing image was seen everywhere from teddy bears to keychains. Dubbed ‘Yonsama’, Bae was a leading figure in the phenomenal “Korean Wave” which swept Japan, becoming a heartthrob to thousands of fans and one of the most recognized actors in Asia.

Fans can meet the star in the World Premiere room where he takes his places alongside Hollywood stars Jodie Foster, Pierce Brosnan, Marilyn Monroe and Andy Lau. Bae’s wax figure will be set against a snowy setting reminiscent of his famous acting role in Winter Sonata.

Kelly Mak, Head of Marketing & Customer Services of Madame Tussauds Hong Kong said, “We are so happy to have a Korean star of Bae’s caliber joining the Madame Tussaud’s all star family.

“The World Premiere room is one of the new and interactive themed areas that are part of Madame Tussauds Hong Kong’s HK$20 million expansion project, and aims to allow guests to meet the most popular and most widely recognized stars in the world.”

The Korea Tourism Organization played an invaluable role in lining up Bae to pose for Madame Tussauds and in negotiating the sitting arrangements which led to the successful completion of the wax figure.

Mr. Park Sang-Cheol, the Executive Director of the Korea Tourism Organization Hong Kong Office, said he was excited to see the inclusion of a Korean star featured at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong.

He said, “We are excited to be working with Madame Tussauds Hong Kong by bringing the wax figure of the top Korean artiste, Mr. Bae Yong Jun to Hong Kong. Bae is the first Korean to be honored with a wax figure in Madame Tussauds.

“His figure will definitely appeal to the Korean people in Hong Kong and accelerate the understanding and exchange between the people of Korea and Hong Kong.”
