Looks like this thing is almost inevitable. Obviously this will require a nice chunk of taxpayer money. I know people hate that. But in a big and growing city, to me it's one of those necessary evils. Go ahead and get it out of the way. And get out in front of the 8 ball and reap the rewards later. The 1000 room hotel in Austin, that's being built, is 32 stories 408 FT. I wonder if the one in Charlotte will be a little bigger in size. Surprised the Observer didn't give a rough estimate on size since this is really big news for Charlotte. But i guess there's nothing really to base it off of.
When reading about Charlotte's success in disparate publications, I've often run across the phrase "Charlotte has been investing in itself for quite some time. And it's paying off."
This 1000 room hotel is a perfect example of what I've read about Charlotte investing in itself.
Sure, things of this stature cost money. But it pays off very very nicely in the long run. Willingness to take on these big improvements is why Charlotte is leaving so many other mid-sized cities in the dust.

Just some info - Austin has two completed 1K+ room Convention Center Hotels:
32-story JW completed in 2015
36-story Fairmont completed this past March
Yeah Hotels definitely seem to be the hardest to guesstimate when it comes to height. You could have a 1000 room at 400' or 1000 room at 800 or better. Not exactly a small window of variance. I'd like for this one to hit at least 500. Height also would give the Hotel another selling point to visitors. Being high up, I know I'd prefer it. And it wouldn't have any competition for views, easily being the tallest hotel in the city. Anyway sounds like we may hear some clearer details in the next few months. Side note: Didn't realize our Convention Center was SO much smaller than rival cities.
Wow, that's pretty crazy. Austin having 2. Jeez, I know it's a booming city but to warrant 2 is pretty telling. Didn't realize it was such a big "it" destination.

Yeah that's kinda shocking. I wonder if it has to do with the University of Texas. don't know if there's much of a correlation, just the first thing to come to mind.

The hotels' benefit from the university is mainly during weekends with home football games. The main draws are big events (SXSW, ACL Fest, F1, etc) and downtown nightlife.
There is also a 800 room Hilton convention center hotel connected to the convention center via a skybridge like the Fairmont. Another 600+ room Marriott CC hotel is under construction and will have a skybridge connection to a proposed ~3 clock CC expansion.
