Belgrade's Vukov Spomenik station, built in 1995 at a depth of 43 meters, at a cost estimated to be tens of million of German deutch marks(same ammount in euros today)
The city's first ...and only metro station has in its ten year existence handled 350.000 trains and 45 million passengers ... today, its really more of a tourist attraction today than a busy metro station;)

Its interesting that two Eastern European cities, Belgrade & Warsaw, opened the first sections of their metro systems at approx. same time - both in spring/summer 1995.
How things have progressed since then we very well know;)

Article from "GLas Javnosti" newspaper...

- Dnevno danas kroz stanicu prođe oko 80 vozova "Beovoza" i teretnih kompozicija i oko deset hiljada putnika.

There are actually three underground stations in Belgrade - Vukov Spomenik (Vuk's Monument) , Karadjordjev Park and Beograd Centar(Belgrade Center) but this one is the most expensive, most presentable...its one of deepest in Europe(outside of former Soviet Union/Russia) and is entirely done in marble.

Warsaw and Belgrade weren't the only cities to open up their metro in summer of 1995.

Dnipropetrovs'k Metro had also opened its first 6 underground stations at that time :eek:kay:

Hopefully a new station will be completed in early 2007, in Dnipro

Just some piece of information!!!

This station isn't supposed to be a METRO, like other cities have... This is supposed, and is going to be a something simmilar to Paris RER.
For those who don't know, Paris RER is rail that goes through suburbs and has few stations in the city and the rest is in suburbs. That's Belgrade's Beovoz. Beovoz has few stations in city and those are : Prokop (Beograd centar) - which is planned to be a new railway station , Vukov spomenik, Karadjordjev park, Novi Beograd , Tosin Bunar, and few more I cannot remember, and the other stations are in metro area of Belgrade... So this is suburban rail...

But, there is a new project of Belgrade light metro, that is going to be build in next years, and it is not going to travel by these rails in this tunnel, but new rails and new stations.
I think they will build a new extention in this station for new LRT because it isn't going to go so deep underground. I think they will build it on the first level when you go undergrond.

I think that this map explains everything, and when this plan is completed , this is going to be fantastic... the great majority of railways will go underground Belgrade and the connection between main ralway station, subrurban rail Beovoz, and the city's Light rail metro is gonna be exellent :)

These two crossroads with tirangles are future main railway station Prokop (Прокоп) that is U/C and is underground ( lower triangle on the picture), and the other one is station Vukov spomenik (Вуков споменик)( upper triangle) , currently presented here, also underground... Karadjordjev park (Карађорђев парк) is the third underground station in Belgrade for suburban rail Beovoz... Also , 14 of 31 future light rail stations will be underground :)

Fatter lines are planned light rail metro, and thinner lines are suburban rail Beovoz.

Here's photos from "Beograd Centar" station...its the main underground station thats right now under/construction(lol...it has been so for past few decades) that is meant to replace the old railway station. It has similar infrastructure to Warsaw's downtown station, meaning, all railway tracks are buried under ground so as not to impede city traffic.

Only few parts of it have so far been opened...the ones that are needed for Beovoz system, Belgrade's suburban railway.

Photos from Minel Schreder website, firm that did the lighting job...

Idea of Belgrade metro has been around for decades now, if not almost an entire century...but aside from a little infrastructure built here and there, and years of debate, nothing has materialized. So its useless even talking about it, at least until we actually see machines digging & drilling the ground.

Prokop is so unfinished, but it seems it'll look nice one day.

So while we're all sitting here waiting for the city's Light Rail Transit system, here's...

Beovoz - Belgrade's suburban/commuter railway network.

Works a lot like this...

btw - Is there any worthwhile news on Prokop these days?
