It happened that on 28th July last year for few hours stopped in the beautiful Kandava town in Kurzeme, Western Latvia. Looked around, took some pictures :) As always - tryed hard to avoid people and to take nice looking pictures. Sorry, that's just how i do.

Location of Kandava in Latvia.

This is ancient town, inhabited place first mentioned in 1230. Town rights were granted in 1625. But as with most towns in Latvia - medieval buildings have not survived, just castle ruins. But the town has beautiful cobblestone streets and interesting late 19th century - early 20th century architecture. Town is tidy and clean but definitely not rich. For tourist this is just good - town has got "that natural look".
There are some 3600 inhabitants in the town.

Let's start with the oldest things in the town:
1. Hillfort of Curonians, it was inhabited in 11th-13th centuries. Beautiful view from it.

2. Almost obligatory attribute of towns and villages in Latvia - medieval castle ruins. Castle was built by Christian invaders in 1253-1259. This castle was partly destroyed in 1840 because the abandoned building was falling apart and dangerous for surrounding buildings. Nowadays there is beautiful park with fountain, nice walks.

3. Next obligatory attribute of Kurzeme (Western Latvia) towns - simple 17th or 18th century church. Of course, Lutheran church. This one is built in 1736.

4. And now, after obligatory views :p - town, as it is. One side of Central Square. Yes, there is central square.

6. Sabile street some meters further away. Sabile is another, similar town some 10 km away.

7. Silent and romantic Talsi Street. Talsi is another, larger town some 25 km away, beautiful place!

8. Fire brigade tower. They always have current year on it - just in case :) All the wooden buildings in the town burned down in 1870 and 1881. Seems - this tower is built shortly after these tragedies.

9. Pils Street, fine building. Note the cat - there is full color harmony.

10. Another building on Pils Street.

11. Liela Street. Abandoned building - local Arts school (also obligatory element in every town) has used it well :)

12. Liela Street again. That's one lovely street. It's name means... just - the Big Street.

13. Far end of Liela Street. Earlier it continued towards the Abava River, but now the road has crossed it.

14. Another end of Liela Street some 1,5 km away. Up, to the right - castle ruins (not seen of course, they are some 25 m higher)

15. Once more - Liela Street.

16. This building was built in 1907-1909 in Neogothic style. That style was out of trend some 15 years at least, but... hehe, province. Now, for 100 years already used as public gatherings and festivity place.

17. In earlier times THIS was the road to Riga. Bridge across Abava River, built in 1873 and carefully renovated in early 2000ies.

18. Lantern at the bridge.

Should I continue with such small towns???

A few more - found in another folder:

19. View on Kandava hillfort. Here you see the classical from of hillfort - very steep sides, levelled surface and moat+dike at the side where it is least protected

20. One more view on castle ruins. Down below - Abava valley.

21. Gunpowder tower nearby. This was dangerous building - thus it was built separately from the castle. Castle did not survive - but gunpowder tower did. But it has no practical use today - walls are thick, windows small, rooms small and heritage inspection - absolutely against any changes :D So - it just stands empty. Each 15 - 20 years it is renovated - but stupid guys love to drop stones on roof.

22. One more view of Liela Street. Children having fun. Much better than lonely life at "Playstation".

gatis, absolutely yes-yes-yes, you should continue with such small towns (; threads like this are imo always more interesting than those of our big cities and big architecture...

...

i'm also planning a little trip in latvia this summer, only not by car, but bike + tent, in north-eastern latvia. do you know, gatis, or anyone else, are towns like ape, alsviki, aluksne, gulbene, balvi etc also that cute? :D

Thanks, many thanks!

Not all of them. Ape - nothing special. Aluksne - very cute. Gulbene - so, so. Some nice things to see. Balvi - almost nothing.

There are some things in this area worth to see - f.e. Gaujiena village with it's castle and old building complex. Scenery around Aluksnes Lake, in Veclaicene etc. is beautiful.

Take some other Northern Latvia towns instead, f.e. - Smiltene, Rujiena, Salacgriva, Limbazi. They are far from eachother though. Take narrow-gauge railway from Aluksne to Gulbene - that's something!

On the way from Aluksne to Gulbene there is Stameriena - go there. That's some otherworldly experience.

Gulbene district as such is quite interesting.
Also in Gulbene town itself there are two interesting palace complexes - as many things in Latvia, these are under reconstruction now:

Btw. something about Aluksne:

I've got a lot more information, just ask me.

Yes, Kandava is interesting place. And many folks visited Riga but hardly anyone would go to Kandava so such thread has great potential!

By all means continue! Alūksne would be a great place for you to share photos of! It certainly has one of the more unique Lutheran churches in Latvia, and a historic center that is nothing to sneeze at!
