If Albany got their act together and NYC didn't drive up the cost of living (aka. the highest tax burden in America for upstate ny) New York would again be the most influential state in the union by far. The state's long standing status of innovation could make it excel in the modern economy if it were more business friendly. Not to mention the Upstate NY landscape is one of the most beautiful in the US and it's people are some of the most friendly.

^^ I didn't think Buffalo was that friendly, I was almost run over by a cop trying to get a way from a crazy hobo.
^^ Ahh, gotta love the derelicts. The funny thing is, ironically, they all seem to have jobs. Pretty impressive for an area where the biggest knock is a lack of jobs.

It would be interesting to see what the corresponding per capita and median incomes are. Sometimes they vary a lot.
It's good that Hartford is number 1...

But put in the high cost of living and the income inequality...there are tens of thousands of people who probably make less than half the $58k...

I thought Bridgeport-Stamford would be higher....
The list is for GMP, It does not have any association with income or cost of living. It is ranking the productivity of the residents. The value of the goods and services that they produce.
Then you could say Hartford has some productive residents..?
Hartford has some productive residents.
Connecticut and New York are very impressive in terms of GMP per capita.

All three major MSAs in Connecticut make the top 13 and all 5 major MSAs in New York make the top 14. In a list including 73 MSAs that is amazing.

1 Hartford $59,494 70.5
2 Bridgeport-Stamford $55,150 49.8

3 Washington $53,735 276.2
4 Boston $52,873 233.7
5 San Jose $52,154 90.8
6 Albany (NY) $51,361 43.4
7 Harrisburg $50,289 26.1
8 San Francisco-Oakland $49,373 204.9

I guess I'd like to know more of what's "behind" the numbers. If the northeast, particularly NYS, is so badly off, how come these numbers would seem to indicate a a strong economy?

Are we still running on sheer fumes from the "powerhouse" industrial days of yore? We used to have TONS of jobs, and we still have yet more than we had when they all "left"; which would imply there are alot, just not alot open.

Or is this an indicator that we're on the rebound, and these numbers are just a precursor to more important indicator numbers that haven't quite cracked through yet?

Or is it completely meaningless, with respect to jobs/economy, etc?

Or some combination?

7 of those top 14 are in the vicinity of 50 or less GMP-Bil, and Hartford and San Jose are lower-mid range. Maybe this just reflects "bang for the buck", with an optimal economic size city (say 200,000-500,000 range)?

Ok, my dad makes $200k and lives in Raleigh which has a much lower ranking. It's an average, it doesn't mean that's what everyone makes.
