Seen as though the first big game is only 2 weeks away today, it seemed timely to start an origin thread. Lockyer is potentially the first casualty, but lucky for Queensland, our halves problem is long gone.

Heres my QLD team for Game 1 exc Lockyer

1. Slater
2. Hunt
3. Inglis
4. Hodges
5. Folou
6. Thurston
7. Prince
8. Hannant
9. Smith
10. Thaiday
11. Johnson
12. Lillyman
13. Shillington

14. Tate
15. P.J Marsh (minimal game time i know but massive impact player)
16. Webb
17. I'm struggling to think of an in form forward. Is Price back yet? Maybe Kafusi or Nutley

mmm very interesting team that - just a few questions - not being picky just interested.
Why would you leave Webb out?
Why would you play Salter out of position rather than Tate who is an unbelievable player in his correct position - he has been an aboslute Origin legend
Myles is an 80 minute player don't you reckon he should be given the opportunity to do so - can't really be used as a shock weapon
Cronk won't be picked as a utility player surely?
Do you reckon Hannant is really better then some of the forwards which you have left out?
excellent team though - just interested in your thoughts...

I think Hunt is more useful than Tate, who I think is overrated at rep level. Slater and Hunt are both deserving, could easily switch them around, but Slater probably fits at wing more than Hunt. I think Inglis has to be a centre, and of the specialist wing options for queensland, I don't think any are better than Hunt or Slater.

I could easily switch Myles with Thaiday, the forward lineup is flexible. Webb I would bring in for Price maybe, excepting that Price plays a lot more minutes, I'd like him to be fit. But Webb hasn't fulfilled his origin promise lately, I see him as fringe more than locked in. Hannant is there just to give a GC fella a shot, he's been playing well too.

Cronk is an excellent player, by all accounts is a capable hooker, can play 5/8th, lock the scrum, a strong defender. I think a utility is necessary as the backs, and particularly the halves, will be targeted by the Blues who will see that as their big chance. And when you have the 3 best halves in the game and NSW is desperate for one, why not rub it in? (also, being a Titans fan, I'd like to see Cronk out of the titans/storm game if Prince is going to be out too)

I included a lot of backup players there, especially in the forwards as there is a bit more depth there than years past, and see the backrow and bench as somewhat undecided right now. And I tried only to include players who were fit and not suspended (Rogers and Lillyman are options), with the exception of Price who has to be there assuming he recovers in time. Which forwards did I neglect to mention? Stagg?

Good reply - but still don't think either Slater or Hunt are a better option than Tate on the wing.
I reckon Bowen is a better option than Cronk on the bench as he can be such a devastating player
For some reason I simply just don't rate Hannant thats why the question arose
As u say Rogers is definately an option
as for forwards to replace Hannant what about:-
Neville Costigan, Ben Ross, Danny Nutley, Parker (who you mentioned)
Can't believe Bell and Tonga can't find a spot unbelievably strong!

Nutley is close to retirement and not good enough, Costigan hasn't been playing and isn't good enough. Ben Ross hasn't done enough or played enough. Bell doesn't offer enough in attack, Tonga runs hot and cold, mostly cold.

Bowen is really only a fullback, doesn't cover any other position well. I would pick Boyd or Bani or Graham over Tate right now. I'd take Michael Luck before Costigan or Nutley.

Slater is fitter and playing better than Hunt or Bowen right now. A backline of

Slater
Folau
Inglis
Hodges
Graham/Boyd

would work for me. Just not Tate, he's not the best choice for mine.

we will have to disagree then as I think he is a great player in a terrible team - if he was still with the Broncos we would still be seeing his true colours
For Queensland fullback I'd rather have Hunt than Slater, Hunt is a bigger guy, and dependable. Not quite as razzle dazzle as Slater or Bowen, but more suited to Origin football. Plus he is more of a utility.

Once again it will be a very close series. NSW having 2 home games should make them slight favourites.
Queensland will win in a canter for mine - but then again I am extremely biased.

QLD doesn't like being the favourite.

No one has a nsw team to offer?

here goes, not the team I'd pick but more something like what I think they'll pick.

Stewart
Hayne
Gasnier
Cooper
Quinn
Anasta
Gidley
White
Buderus
Kite
Hoffman
Tupou
Bird

Gallen
Laffranchi
Heighington
Cross

I agree. Plus i dislike Billy Slater.....ALOT! lol

What an awesome backline we're gonna have!
I think Cronk would make a fatastic utility player, i think he would go better then Bowen, because Bowen can only realistically replace the fullback or wing, where as Cronk can replace hooker, halfback, 5/8 and in the centres.

He has a solid defensive game and has the ball handling and kicking skills to play in the 5/8 halves positions as well.
All I want this year is for NSW to win :D:D:D
NSW!!! That's my insightful commentary.
I read up on the State of Origin series concept and I personally think that its an absolutely brilliant idea. It should be implemented at a high profile platform in Canada for a sport like hockey. The Ontario - Quebec rivalry can be played up to a tizzy.

Yeah it's a great concept. It's certainly the pinnacle of rugby league, not the international test matches as some may think.

I've been thinking the same thing for quite a while. The New South Wales-Queensland rivalry in league is legendary and if something like that could be done in hockey, it'd be awesome. Ontario could have Thornton, Spezza, Staal, Turco and Quebec could feature Lecavalier, Briere, St. Louis, Giguere.
