The Castro's Home restaurant has sat vacant and boarded up for several years, but is now likely on its way to becoming 60 new apartments. Plans for a new rental building from developer Brian Spiers, who put up Linea just down the street, first emerged last spring. They are now moving forward, notes Hoodline, with new designs from Arquitectonica that show a seven-story building with balconies, a pillared entryway, and ground-floor retail. The design has changed fairly significantly from its original form. According to documents submitted to Planning, the alterations are meant to make the building feel less commercial and more residential, Hoodline notes.

The project hasn't yet entered its environmental review stage, but if it does receive Planning approvals, there will eventually be 6 studios, 31 one-bedrooms, and 23 two-bedrooms on site. The 60 total apartments are down from the 64 originally proposed. There will also be 15 parking spots and enough indoor bike parking spots for every unit to have one. No official timeline has been laid out for the project, but the run-down, graffitoed old Home restaurant is likely to continue contributing to corner blight for at least another couple of years.
