According to http://www.wirelessestimator.com/t_content.cfm?pagename=1500-foot_Self_Supporting_Tower , there is a 457 metres tall free-standing radio tower planned at Crystal Lake, Illinois . Does someone know more about the project? How will it look like?

The real question is what TV / FM stations will broadcast from this beast? We should be able to pick them up here in Madison, given the tower's height! (Reception distance is a function of signal strength and tower height.)
It's a little known fact

(I remember when it was the world's tallest free standing structure):

What is the actual state of this project?

I thought that the tallest self-supporting structure in the USA (since 2001-09-11) was the Sears/Willis Tower with its antenna masts. (Prior to that it was 1 World Trade Center with its antenna mast.)

Yea, the KVLY tower is a guyed mast, NOT 'freestanding' or 'self supporting'.
