Actually I would like to use this opportunity to raise this issue again, I know this is going a bit off-topic and people may say I am being selfish

First, currently there is or was a natural disaster in Burma, China did her part donating millions of dollars, and ask the Burmese government to cooperate with the international aid but they refused to do so , and yet there are accusations on the internet saying that China is keeping silent and doing nothing to help except for propping up the regime and suggest using the Olympics to again blackmail China.

Secondly, China is now still a developing country with 1.3 billion mouths to feed, going through a massive industrialisation and having many internal problems, so doesn't China need to help herself first ?

Thirdly, China herself is faced with so many natural disasters, take the January snow storm disaster, I did not hear any international community saying anything about helping China, where was the international community ? Instead I saw venomous news site writing about potential riots, civil wars, panic...It's like they really want to see it happen.

And now here comes the earthquake disaster, and I am really looking forward to seeing how the international community will react to this. Are they just going to stand there and stare ? make fun ? criticise ? or will they help ?

'Hundreds buried' by China quake

Almost 900 students are buried after an earthquake measuring 7.8 caused a building to collapse in south-western China, state media reports.

President Hu Jintao urged "all-out" efforts to rescue victims of the quake, which hit 92km (57 miles) from Chengdu, Sichuan's provincial capital.

Premier Wen Jiabao is travelling to the area and troops are being sent to help with disaster relief efforts.

Officials have confirmed 107 deaths in the area but the figure could rise.

Cries for help

There are harrowing reports from the scene of the collapse in Dujiangyan city - about 100km (60 miles) from the epicentre in Wenchuan county.

Teenagers buried beneath the rubble of the three-storey school building were struggling to break free, while others were crying out for help, state news agency Xinhua reported.

Parents were watching as cranes excavated the site. Villagers rushed to help with the rescue.

Two girls said they escaped because they had "run faster than others".

Earlier, four schoolchildren were reported to have died, and more than 100 others were injured, when primary school buildings collapsed in the Chongqing area near Sichuan province, Xinhua reports.

Another person is reported to have died when a water tower collapsed in the city of Mianyang, in Santai county.

A spokesman for Gansu province said 10 people were killed and 14 injured by collapsing buildings in Pingliang and Longnan.

Forty-four aftershocks have been reported since the quake, which was the strongest to hit Sichuan province in more than 30 years, Xinhua reports.

Troops and helicopters have been sent to help with relief work.

The BBC's Quentin Somerville says the Chinese army has a good record of mobilising and getting people to safety.

State television said the quake had not caused major damage to Chengdu, which has a population of more than 10 million people, or to the nearby Three Gorges Dam.

Chengdu, residents streamed on to the streets, cracks were reported in some buildings and water pipes burst.

"Some building are cracked, but nothing major, from what we can see in the area near our hotel," Gilles Barbier in Chengdu told the BBC News website.

"The quake was really strong, continuous. Two aftershocks could be felt."

Workers in Beijing - about 930 miles from Chengdu - said buildings shook for about two minutes and many were evacuated.

In the city's financial district, people poured out of buildings, but there were no visible signs of damage.

Tremors were also felt as far afield as Beijing, the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi in Vietnam.

Panic

Bobby Silby in Zhengzhou in Henan province said he was having lunch in a restaurant when he felt the tremors.

"It felt like the floor was moving all around me, everyone started running outside in a panic," he told the BBC news website. "The streets are still filled with people who haven't gone back into their buildings."

Telephone lines to the affected areas were jammed.

The area where Monday's earthquake struck lies on the eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau.

Wenchuan county is home to the Wolong Nature Reserve, China's leading research and breeding base for endangered giant pandas.

Earthquakes are common in China - in March a 7.2 magnitude quake struck in western Xinjiang province.

Powerful earthquake hits Sichuan

BEIJING -- A major earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale jolted Wenchuan County of southwest China's Sichuan Province at 2:28 pm Monday, the State Seismological Bureau said, revising a previous figure of 7.6.

The epicenter of the quake was located 31.0 degrees north latitude and 103.4 degrees east longitude, the bureau said.

President Hu Jintao instructed to do utmost efforts to rescue and treat the victims, and Premier Wen Jiabao is on the way to Sichuan to direct the rescue efforts, according to a Xinhua report.
Four pupils died in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality on Monday afternoon when an earthquake toppled two primary schools in the outer Liangping County of Chongqing.

More than 100 students were reportedly injured, the local government said. In the quake-stricken areas, it was not immediately clear if there were any casualties or damage from the tremor.

"We felt continuous shaking for about two or three minutes. All the people in our office are rushing downstairs. We're still feeling slight tremblings," said an office worker in Chengdu.

With a population of 111,800, Wenchuan lies in southeast part of the Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba, 146 km to the northwest of Chengdu, provincial capital of Sichuan.

Wenchuan is home to the Wolong Nature Reserve, China's leading research and breeding base of the endangered giant pandas.

In Beijing's financial district, many workers poured from their buildings but there were no visible signs of damage. The subway system was unaffected.

"People were shouting 'get out, get out', so we all ran out of our dorm," said a student surnamed Zhang at a university in nearby Chongqing.

Xinhua reporters in many other parts of China also reported tremors. Reporters in Chengdu said they saw cracks on walls of some residential buildings in the downtown areas, but no building collapsed.

The telecom networks in Chengdu and Chongqing cities broken down for a while after the quake. People complained they were unable to have phone calls on the fixed line or the mobile.

The quake was also felt in Zhengzhou, capital of central Henan Province, where people rushed out of homes and offices and took to the streets.

Many said they felt dizzy and saw the pendant lamps on their ceilings swinging back and forth.

In Lanzhou, capital of the northwest China's Gansu Province, the quake sent many parked cars by the roadside buzzing. Xinhua reporters in Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, said they felt the office building rocking back and forth for about four minutes.

A retiree in Leshan City of Sichuan Province said over the telephone that a wall in her garden collapsed, while a repairman in Chongqing saw the ceiling of his factory shamble and alarmed the staff, who soon left the building. In Shanghai, people were evacuated from office buildings in Hongqiao and Nanjing Road.

An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale jolted Tongzhou District in east Beijing at 2:35 p.m. Monday. The quake's epicenter was located 39.8 north latitude and 116.8 east longitude, according to the State Seismological Bureau.

In Shanghai, people were evacuated from office buildings in Hongqiao and Nanjing Road.
Mobile phones in Chengdu and Chongqing could not be reached for a while on Monday afternoon.
