At the corner of St Mary's Axe and Camomile St there is some demolition going on. Right next to the existing Baltic Exchange building, #50 St Mary's Axe.

Anyone know what is going on there? Anything exciting?

^ Is it? But I'm sure St Mary had an axe which she used to circumcise Jesus!

Nice try, but nowhere near as good as the actual origin of the name

....the true origin of the name appears from a document of the reign of H. VIII. 1514, above referred to, in which the full dedication is set out to St. Mary the Virgin, St. Ursula and the Eleven thousand Virgins, the name "Axe" being added because the church boasted possession, as a relic, of one of the three axes with which the Virgins were executed (Bills, 5 H. VIII. No.79) set out in Gentleman's Mag. Lib. XVI. 44, 45.

From: 'Mary (St.) at Hill - Mary (St.) de Cricherche, Chapel', A Dictionary of London (1918).

You can never have too much gherkin.

The building in the foreground and to the right is the remaining Baltic Exchange.

There's very little to see at the moment, the only street-level observation point being two small holes in the gate. There's currently a digger doing diggy things atop a pile of rubble.

Not sure why this has its own thread, but for the sake of it, this is the site:

And this is what is being built.

doesnt look terribly comfortable with the building on the right though. Good majority glass office buildings always wins out next to old stone buildings, you can never replicate the old floor heights with a modern office so why bother pretending?! It just looks disjointed like a bad optical illusion. The City is full of such misconceived ideas of how to respect the past.
