I did not like it before, but now I warmed up to it and I think it will fit London City perfectly. The side cladding will also help 20FS fit in better.

Exclusive: Mace to build 'Can of Ham'

Mace has been appointed to a pre-construction deal to build the much delayed ‘Can of Ham’ project at 60-70 St Mary Axe, Construction News can reveal.

The scheme is being developed by TIAA Henderson Real Estate and comprises more than 277,570 sq ft of offices over 24 floors.

It will also include retail space on the ground floor.

Construction News understands the contract value to be in excess of £100m.

The project was granted planning approval by the City of London in the summer of 2008 but immediately hit delays as the global financial crisis took hold following the collapse of Lehman Brothers that September.

The Foggo Associates-designed project will join a cluster of iconic towers in the centre of the City, including neighbouring 30 St Mary Axe, commonly known as the Gherkin.

The Can of Ham was initially proposed by UK property investor and developer Targetfollow but was sold to TIAA-CREF in 2011 after the company went into administration.

The contract award is the latest in a string of recent high-profile wins for Mace.

In December, the firm bagged a contract to build Fraser Property’s £65m Vauxhall Sky Gardens’ 36-storey tower residential scheme in London.

It was also appointed construction manager for the first phase of the £50m Royal Wharf development in east London.

Royal Wharf is a 363,000 sq m waterfront development, being jointly developed by the subsidiary of Singapore-based developer Oxley Holdings and UK-based Ballymore.

Mace was also shortlisted for the first phase of Qatari Diar’s £3bn Chelsea Barracks scheme and is now the only UK contractor shortlisted for Wanda One’s £400m One Nine Elms development after other UK firms pulled out of the race.

Mace declined to comment.

Hmmm, not sure about this one. Is this one absurd shape too many? The original idea of a 40 storey tower in the international style would have been amazing, especially given the recent news that Aviva will likely be demolished.

I think the White Tower prevents the crystal ring from being completed though, sadly.
