From brisbanetimes.com.au:

Commerce Queensland president Beatrice Booth has enthusiastically welcomed plans by former Olympian Mark Stockwell to establish an $800 million World Trade Centre at Brisbane International Airport.

Premier Peter Beattie joined Mr Stockwell in New York today for a meeting with the president of the World Trade Centre Association Mr Guy Tozzoli and Executive Vice-President Mr Robert DiChiara.

Mr Stockwell must secure the rights for the licence to establish a World Trade Centre in Brisbane from the World Trade Centre Association before proceeding with his plan.

Ms Booth said Commerce Queensland had held the licence for a World Trade Centre in Queensland for almost 10 years and "sold" it to Mr Stockwell's Stockwell Building and Development firm in October 2006.

"It was time where we thought there was an opportunity to make it available to a developer who had a greater chance of establishing a centre as a beacon for the state," she said.

"Commerce Queensland has written a letter of recommendation to the World Trade Centre Association recommending the licence be transferred to Mr Stockwell. So having the Premier with him at the meeting will give the application extra weight," she said.

Ms Booth said the concept allowed a major hotel complex to be sited at Brisbane Airport as part of trade organisation which fostered international and domestic trade opportunities for businesses.

"There is a very successful model at Schiphol Airport in Germany which includes an airport and a number of organisations from different countries," she said.

For the formal transfer between Commerce Queensland and Stockwell to take place, approval must be granted from the WTCA Board of Directors.

Mr Beattie said that Commerce Queensland had held the rights to establish a World Trade Centre for several years before signing over to Stockwell.

"Now that Stockwell has come on board, the project is rapidly gaining momentum," Mr Beattie said.

"Negotiations are already underway between Stockwell and the Brisbane Airport Corporation about building at the international terminal.

"This is an exciting venture that would generate more business for Queensland, lift our profile internationally and create more jobs for Queenslanders.

"It is an excellent concept and has the government's strong support."

Good news...I wonder what the design will be like. I don't like the idea of it being at the Airport though, I thought the city would be a far better place.
Courier Mail:

INSPIRED by his visit to New York, Premier Peter Beattie wants Brisbane to have its own World Trade Centre.

Mr Beattie has thrown his support behind a private sector bid to build an $800 million World Trade Centre in Brisbane.

Visiting New York City on a trade mission overnight, Mr Beattie joined project promoter, Olympian Mark Stockwell, for talks aimed at securing World Trade Centre Association (WTCA) approval for the venture.

Mr Beattie and Mr Stockwell, of Stockwell Building and Development, met with president of the WTCA Guy Tozzoli and executive vice-president Robert DiChiara.

In October 2006, Stockwell signed an agreement with business group Commerce Queensland to take over the rights to establish a World Trade Centre in Brisbane.

WTCA approval is needed for the formal transfer to take place.

"I'm delighted to lend my support for the Stockwell initiative to obtain WTCA approval and proceed with this groundbreaking project," Mr Beattie said.

Negotiations are under way between Stockwell, a former Olympic swimmer, and the Brisbane Airport Corporation about building at the international terminal.

"This is an exciting venture that would generate more business for Queensland, lift our profile internationally and create more jobs for Queenslanders," Mr Beattie said.

yes!! bring it on put it on top of Eagle street pier!!
When I went through UNI we had a guest lecturer come and talk to us about lifts. ONe set of drawings he had, for the purposes of discussing lift cores, was for a World Trade Centre building that was designed and partly documented for the Eagle Street site next to customs house. I think its 175 Eagle Street? ANyway that building obviously never went ahead. I think I recall it to have been about 18 storeys or so.

yeah, it was proposed to be built at 175 eagle st.. they got as far as excavating/constructing the basement and then the developer went bust.
Having a World Trade Centere in Melbourne has really put the city on the map :) It is really just an another office comlplex with a fancy name.
If it's at the airport it's not going to be tall, not much to be excited about. In fact it's cheating the city of some more office vacancy pressure.
I saw Stockwell and mistakenly thought it was Stockland... and got excited. Eagle St Pier would suit a World Trade Centre to at T. Perhaps even Northbank...

The roads & supporting infrastructure out near the airport are not built for this kind of development.
Brisbane needs something like this, from what I hear BCEC is booked solid for 10 years, and the extension won't make up for 10 years backlog.

I'd love to build a proper child care in the CBD, gold mine I reckon....

I agree.

Purely in regards to the name - I think the World Trade Centre tag should only be given to tall buildings, and there wont be anything tall at the airport.

easier for the planes to hit it if its closer to the airport.
I agree.

Why should the WTC tag only be given to tall buildings?
imo, a WTC would be great for Brisbane no matter where it is, as long as its easily accessible.
Does anyone even know what a "World Trade Centre" is? What makes it so special?
Reminds me a little of the much touted "multi-function polis" that was to be built near the Gold Coast years ago. We lost that to Adelaide and now the whole world is in awe of Adelaide.
I thought it was some sort of exclusive club but it doesn't seem so from their website. Brisbane is the only city listed in the Pacific region to have one, proposed or otherwise.

If Brisbane gets this it will vault the city's international status and a place it alongside other well known World Trade Centre cities including: Buffalo, Anchorage, El Paso, Chelyabinsk, Wuxi, Eindhoven, Almere, Koeln, and about a thousand-and-one other cities.

Since there are so many cities listed i wonder why there are none in Australia or New Zealand? Neither Sydney or Melbourne have one despite about eight within Africa.
