What it basically says is that the Montreal suburbs will get a new area code...579 to go along with the 450 area code. Along with the 438 and 514 area codes for Montreal, the greater Montreal area now has 4 codes!

It means that there is more people in the area... It's pretty good news
Not necessarily, it's just that more numbers are being used up. Businesses, cell phones, fax machines and pagers as well as home phones plus additional lines all use up the existing pool of available telephone numbers. The same is true for other areas which received additional area codes, Toronto, Kitchener, Vancouver, Alberta and more recently Ottawa.

IMO, they should have divided it geographically:

The northern suburbs get one, and the southern suburbs get the other.

who ever takes care of this should have used their heads first ( I think it is the CRTC). Most countries ( even 3rd world countries) give a seperate area code for cell phones except in canada.

anyway, montreal area is getting pack so we need 3 ( montreal, south shore , north shore which is laval and other), but now we have 4 and we are mixed up. 450 is brossard or laval.
514 is that a cell phone or your home number
.......

Hi superstar take a look at this map, just think of the Montréal area as a doughnut. With 514/438 being the hole in the middle of the doughnut, and 450/579 being the rest of the doughnut. :)
