You don't need to provide Greek or Hindu examples, Arabs have many gods and goddesses of their own. And they do use "ilah(a)/al-ilah(a)" to refer to them. 
If the word Allah was the source of your confusion, then you should remember that without the definite article we would be left with "lah" not "ilah". This was done intentionally to emphasize the genderless nature of God.
