A Brazilian "crypto-mosque" church and the word ilah

Hello again Middle Easterners!

In this thread in the Brazilian forum one forumer shows us a church in Brazil whose interior contains ancient Arabic inscriptions and mosque-like decoration.

Very interesting since apparently many of the early Brazilian blacks/slaves were actually West African muslims, and they may have built themselves a mosque disguised as a church, we are not sure yet about the history here.

When explaining to Brazilians about the Arabic writings in the church, I hit upon a doubt: when using the term "ilah" (or feminine "ilaha", god / goddess) for instance when speaking of Zeus, Shiva ou Aphrodite, can the definite article be put in ilah and ilaha?

For example: Apollo was the greatest Greek god. Would this be "al-ilah alyunani alakbar"? Can "al" be added to "ilah" (or ilaha goddess)?

Thank you!

Can "al" be added to "ilah" (or ilaha goddess)?

YES
You don't need to provide Greek or Hindu examples, Arabs have many gods and goddesses of their own. And they do use "ilah(a)/al-ilah(a)" to refer to them. :)

If the word Allah was the source of your confusion, then you should remember that without the definite article we would be left with "lah" not "ilah". This was done intentionally to emphasize the genderless nature of God.
Btw, the pictures in that link are very interesting.

Thank you, because I was taking a look at the Arabic wikipedia page on Zeus and ilah appears without article.

Can you provide examples of sentences with ilah or ilaha with the definite article?
mopc, a quick search of الاله in google found me many results. :)

Well that's because Google automatically includes الآلة "al-alah" (the machine)
