A road trip for the Flyers

i made my first road trip for the flyers. i didn't have to work or coach over the weekend, and so thursday night i decided to visit my grandparents for the weekend and treat them to a sabres game (and treat myself to a flyers game).

walking to hsbc arena from downtown.

the rink

warm-ups

i walked down to the 100 level to watch the flyers warm up. here's esche preparing to block some warm-up shots.

the flyers take turns skating in and taking close shots.

some close range shots on esche. there's a lot of orange and black in the seats in the background. :)

more warming up.

niittymaki takes some warm-up shots.

quite a few flyers fans at this game.

the mascot come flying in from the rafters.

the sabres are introduced to the crowd.

the flyers skate onto the ice. despite the lack of attention in the form of a spotlight given to the flyers, most flyers fans saw them come out on the ice and cheered them on.

the opening faceoff.

umberger scrores.

gagne scores.

second period action.

more second period action.

dj scores.

a nice check into the boards by brashear i believe.

third period action.

the players exchange some words.

more third period action.

knuble scrores to seal the deal.

flyers win.

i didn't get too rowdy for the game snice i was with my relatives. i did join in with the "let's go flyers" chants and some of the "zeus" chants.

it was a good game for me. there were a lot of flyers fans; maybe around 10% of the crowd was philly fans. that's not bad considering this wasn't a divisional game or anything. but i don't think many people travelled for the games; most people i met are philadelphians who moved to buffalo or canada for their job.

i wanted to buy playoff tickets for the inevitable philly/buffalo first round series, but i wouldn't be able to make the game because of work or coaching or anything. so i guess it's just one sabres game for me this year.

Yeah, Philly is a much loved team, indeed. That's why there is a decent amount of fans at those games. They play exhibition games at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario, the closest arena to me, because their arena is owned by the same company that owns the Wachovia Center, and as a result (and with London boy Jeff Carter on the team), a good amount of Flyers fans in London. I'd like to see these two teams face off there (at the JLC) someday.

Philly deserved to win that game, btw. They were the better team that night, Sabres didn't play well, although thankfully not as bad as that 7-0 blowout against the worst team in the NHL (and by now, we know who I mean :) ). You should see when their fans come down here for games against the Sabres, it is HORRIFIC.

Glad to see you had a good time at that game. Someday I might just see how much of a hockey town Philly is, by perhaps planning a trip down there sometime. :)

Good pictures!

i think you would like seeing a hockey game down here. you'll find that philly fans are some of the most knowledgeable in sports. we're also very very passionate about our teams (as evidenced by the large amount of fans that were in buffalo for the road game, including myself). and each city has their own sports culture, so you'll get a feeling of what it's like to be a philly fan.
