Govt’s 10b Birr Project Collapses

The government has indefinitely shelved an ambitious real estate project in the city involving 200 high-rise apartment buildings following the lending cap on banks. This project was expected to be launched last year, costing over 10 billion Br. However, the project was delayed for over a year, with the government failing to access seed money to kick-start the construction of what would have been the single largest real estate venture in the country. The mega real estate project was planned to be undertaken by Chinese construction company Shangai Construction Group.

This is an update on the massive project to build something like 200 30-floor buildings. I'm kinda glad it's shelved. We need the private sector to do this, not the government. That's not their job and the money is better spent elsewhere.

well, the government can/should kick start these kinds of investments to build confidence since the private sector is extremely weak.
I am not sure if the city infrastructure can support these types of projects; water service, waste management, roads, electricity... I hope it won't turn out to be a public health nightmare packing that many people in a small area.

Yes, the infrastructure is very important 'ause all the building need the system, just like the forest, if the earth is not rich, there will no big trees.:banana:

I don't believe govt has to involve in such kind of projects which can be filled by the private firm but i do believe this kind of projects will have a huge impact in curbing the unemployment in the city and stimulating the local economy too bad this project is not implemented as intended. There was a better approach to implement this project with insuring the private and the public investor to take part. I don't have full information about the retirement plans and savings in Ethiopia, but this could be a better long term investment for the firm running this saving account. I would love the government to partner with the private banks and retirement saving accounts to implement this project. I am sure it will have a huge impact in the local economy dynamics and good returns for the retires during their time of relaxing.

The only good thing in Addis infrastructure is: it is not centralized or don't exist, this will enable modern short cuts and developments can be deployed with out huge cost. The administration has to think implementing low cost high tech and decentralized approach which is the current modern city management and development trend. I wish they could take some lessen from cities in the Nordic and Germany about the possibility of decentralizing the basic infrastructure in order to get efficient management.

specifically addis need a very efficient waste and waste water management practice. I am not even sure if there exist a single waste treatment facility or collection system. I happen to see the rivers in the city and is too sad the capital city of Africa host an open sewer in the form of river.

speaking of waste management.................

New rubbish dump to produce power

Plan part of city agency’s overhaul of waste management system

The Addis Ababa City Administration is planning that a new landfill site outside the city will also convert solid waste into electricity. “The agency has chosen the new landfill site at Chebe Woregenu, 26km northeast of Addis Ababa, for the purpose of generating electric power from solid waste that comes from the capital city,” the agency deputy head, Gezahengn Lebelo (Eng), told Capital.

For several years one of the major problems in Addis Ababa has been the management of waste collection and disposal. The current city administration elected in mid 2008 has placed a priority on improving the system. This budget year, the Sanitation, Beatification and Parking Development Agency has reorganised operations, leading to the recent creation of the Waste Recycle and Management Project Office.

Gezahengn said the agency is looking at different ways to solve waste pollution in the city. “The landfill site selected in Chebe Woregenu is one of the projects that will be implemented” he explained.

According to the agency deputy head, preparation and demarcation will be complete before July, while the other work that includes the building of a power generation centre will take two years.

Thanks for your information. That is one hell good initiative!

I hope they will similar think in building the waste water collection and sewer system soon. My guess is most of the city are not connected to the city's sewer system.

What?
What is the progress on the project? Did it just disappear?
I wish they would get rid of those ugly, yellow/white, 1970s, government apartment buildings in bole. I used to hate looking at them they are so ugly and run down.
Why am I not surprised that you would like them? Lol
So "Govt’s 10b Birr Project Collapses" was about the buildings... thought it was about the dam.

Because they're tall, and are mixed use? Basically something you'd see in a western city. Give a great deal of density to the region. Could use a fresh coat of paint though...

Isn't density wonderful?

Simfan, this was updated in another thread a few months ago. The government was securing funds for it from China. I think it was about the same time as the rail funding.

I really like these buildings (well the building in photo 2 could use an upgrade). These are the kind of buildings that you see in mass construction in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, etc. They really do make the skyline look better, and make the area look much more developed.
