Malaysia committed to buy 4 units in exchange for making small composite parts for the project .

Malaysia bought it purely to enhance ties with the EU.

Otherwise the Malaysian air force would prefer more C-130J as we already have 15 C-130 and is pissed off that the A400M is delayed. Malaysia is lucky if it could get the first Atlas by 2015.

The four A400 for the malaysians should have a payload equivalent to 5-6 C-130..

From what I read, the A400M is a big drain on EADS. While the plane is great, but base on orders and sales, it is currently not a success compared to the C-130 and C-17.
These planes are not comparable. The C-130 is a 60 years old design (first flight in 1954), smaller than the A400M, carrying less cargo, that has less range, and is much cheaper.

The C-17A is also older than the A400M (first flight in 1991).

The A400M (first flight in 2009) is actually a more successful seller than the C-17 was when the program had the same age : in 1996, 5 years after the C-17's first flight, this aircraft only had 120 orders (all from US).
By comparison, five years after its first flight, the A400M has 174 orders from 8 customers.

But then again, the A400M is not in the same payload/range/price category of the C-17.

I don't know why they bothered to power this with turboprops. They should have make it a twin turbofan. The Kawasaki C2 was built this way, and has better performance in a similar sized aircraft.
