Passengers by Urban or Metro Areas (only locations with +5 million passengers)
46,857,693 Rome
44,053,667 Milan
Interesting, Milan is Italy's most populous metro area and is the economic centre of the country but Rome still manages to get more air passengers than Milan

Hi guys,

first of all I want to thank you for your support and nice words. Getting more than 20 likes for a "sorry" message I posted earlier this month really made me happy and proud you like my graphs and statistics. Again I am sorry I was not publishing anything lately but thanfully I have more time now.

Here are some data for YTD until November, still plenty of airport has not released their end year data.

As you can see below November was quite good month, definately as oppose to September which was particurarly affected by weather in North America. An impressive 7.82% growth was achived, the 4th biggest increase in 2017. From the 4th graph can be seen the rolling 12-month increase, which is already the highest since 2008/2009 financial crisis. This year is excellent so far!

Now with monthly data for November :)

Some of the airports has not released their data, thus numbers are estimated (in red).
Only one airport got my attention in November, that was FRA. Its huge increase was caused by Lufthansa strikes, not only last year, but the year before. In 2015 the week long attendant strike caused 11.25% decrease for FRA. Year after, the combination of weather and small strike, contributed to only 4.93% increase. And finally November 2017 was witouth any issues or problems and FRA got incredible 21.08% increase.

IST is recovering fast, DEL despite capacity constrains still maintained double digit growth, CGK's number are improving every month. CAN is climbing fast and narrowing the gap between its biggest rival PVG.

So many more information are there, so let me know if you are interested in something :)

Maybe going forward you can publish those figures on a quarterly basis to have more free time? Still enough information and important ones are the full year ones.

P.S.: could you please mark changes/additional data in your above overview so we can track the changes? Many thanks for the effort and data updates!

They have developed a 12 billion euro plan for the transformation of Roma Fiumicino Airport. The goal is to bring passenger traffic up to 71 million in 2030 and 100 million by 2044. :)

I had published an article in February 2015

Aeroporti di Roma investing €12bn in Fiumicino transformation

Rome’s strategic position at the very heart of Italy means Fiumicino Airport has a vast catchment area, which is set to grow even further following the announcement of a new intermodal product. Significantly, Fiumicino is the first airport in Italy to integrate the air and rail transport systems, with Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) and Trenitalia – Italy’s state-owned main train operator – collaborating on a high-speed rail link that now connects Fiumicino with Bologna, Florence and Venice. In a wide-ranging interview with Airport Business in Rome, Lorenzo Lo Presti, CEO Aeroporti di Roma, discussed the impact of the new high-speed rail links, traffic growth, and ongoing infrastructure plans.

“The integration of the two transport systems – air and rail – will confirm the role of Fiumicino as the country’s hub, and extends the offering of flights via Fiumicino to the areas of Bologna, Florence and Venice,” Lo Presti explained. “The citizens of these cities, who currently reach their intercontinental destinations through other European airports, such as Frankfurt and Paris CDG, will be able to plan their journey from the capital’s airport.”

“With the new intermodal product, we can offer all the carriers an excellent ‘starting point’ to successfully launch long-haul services. Rome’s geographic position makes it an ideal gateway to the Mediterranean and Middle East,” Lo Presti added.

ADR is working hard on an ambitious infrastructure plan, including strong traffic growth, the entry of new carriers at Fiumicino, and development of new routes. Lo Presti enthused that this is “only the starting point”.

There are three main elements to the infrastructure plans: a terminal revitalisation programme to increase the level of service and comfort for passengers in existing terminals; the Fiumicino South Completion Plan to double the terminal surface area, and upgrade the apron, taxiway systems and all airport subsystems, including loading bridges, baggage systems and technical plants; and the Fiumicino North Master Plan to extend the current airport boundary to the north with a new terminal, new runways, real estate development, and links to Fiumicino South. These expansion plans, alongside new road and rail connections, are fundamental to achieving the increased passenger traffic expected at Fiumicino.

The total investment in the Rome airport system is huge: €12 billion by 2044. The next key date is October 2016, when the Terminal 3 extension and new Boarding Area F at Fiumicino will be complete, adding a further 90,000sqm to cater for both Schengen and non-Schengen flights.

Attention will then turn to Terminal 1, where a new check-in hall and new Pier A will be completed in 2019. A new Terminal 4 will be the final step in the Fiumicino South Completion Plan. “This is only part of the plan – our attention is already oriented towards Fiumicino North. The extension of the current airport was already considered as a safeguarded area for development since the 1970s,” Lo Presti added.

Ah that it must be. It happens sometimes that because of some freak reason airports stop growing despite the skyrocketing economy. France always has a good portion of these strikes reducing the reliability of especially Air France, Frankfurt however also saw a downfall in the past years. It was hard to put a finger on the 2014-2016 stagnation of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, until finally the Halim Perdanakusuma numbers were published.

And now we know that 6 million of them, including me once, used that airport in 2016!

Other reasons that sometimes play a role: slot limitations with stagnation and higher prices (Jakarta, Heathrow), repression on airline freedoms (Toronto, Gulf carriers '17), airline and airport safety (Kuala Lumpur '15, Brussels '16), airline financial instability (I'm sure some through travellers avoided Rome), just an ordinary recession (Brazil '14-'16) or a sneaky way out because of minor tax changes (just any former Ryanair base ever), sometimes very obvious, sometimes very subtle.

Manchester (EGCC/MAN) Statistics - December 2017 (Part 1)

Destinations that are either new (no passengers since my records started in January 2005), or have not been served for a number of years - if the latter then the month and year of the last service is shown.

Edmonton appears for the first time, however I am slightly skeptical of the CAA data of 3 scheduled passengers.
Kharkov (Ukraine) was another newcomer with 565 charter passengers.

One domestic statistic are currently missing from the CAA report for December.

Belfast City has yet to provide figures

Total passengers for this route in December 2016 were 20,603

Moving monthly and annual figures - based on CAA statistics/MAG statistics

Monthly passengers - 1,833,620 + 1.50%
Annual Total- 22,548,757

Monthly Movements - 13,993 -3.12%
Annual Movements - 161,259
