Agree and long term a 3rd population centre, Africa, will propel it even further. The region can probably support 3-4 massive hubs eventually.

For Africa-Asia flights yes. I think Africa-Europe flights are mostly short enough to go direct, or even on longer routes a detour via a middle east or Turkey hub wouldn't add much in terms of convenience.

Maybe somewhere like Lagos could create a hub for flights from Africa to the Americas?

I agree that most flights between Africa and Europe will be direct. Regarding Africa to America, it's hard to say. I suppose somewhere in around Nigeria would work for south America. I know Air Canada is starting direct flights Montreal - Casablanca in June. On the north American end Air Canada intends to use Toronto and Montreal as their hubs between Africa and north American destinations.

I should amend the last sentence: On the north American end Air Canada intends to use Toronto and Montreal as their hubs between Africa/Europe and north American destinations.

So Istanbul has now overtaken Frankfurt as European #4 on a rolling 12 month basis? Any chance Frankfurt will regain that spot or will Istanbul just pull further ahead and catch up with Schipol/CDG in a year or two?

Frankfurt will have reached the capacity limit (about 70 million PAX) by the end of the year. The first section of the new Terminal 3 will not go into operation until 2020, the other sections 2023.
It is strange how the Turks manage to handle as many passengers at a significantly smaller airport as in Frankfurt......

Even though São Paulo Terminal (GRU, CGH and VCP) handled 69 million passengers in 2017, only 14.5 million are international (14 million from GRU, 500k from VCP).

Still, it's Brazil's main gateway, way ahead Rio de Janeiro (GIG, with 4.3 million international passengers). 3rd is São Paulo-Viracopos, followed by Brasília, Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre with 400k each.

Hi guys,

finally majority of airports released their January statistics so I can provide for the first time consolidated data view. I hope my charts are understandable, however there is a little explanation:

%: means growth compare to the same period last year
#: means total count of airports (example: there is 136 US airports included in my chart)
% S: means share of passenger traffic on total traffic
# %: means change in the ranking over the same period last year (example: ICN is ranked as 7th busiest in January 2018, however it was 12th last year, improved ranking by 5)
# (W): the first number means rank in the region category (EUR, ASP+MEA, NAM+LAC) and the second indicates world ranking (example: LHR is the busiest airport in Europe, but in the world ranking its situated on 11th spot)
# %: again, means change in the ranking over the same period last year, however the fist number indicates change rank in the region category, the second number in the world ranking (example: LHR is 1st in EUR as it was last year, so no change in the ranks, but it dropped in the world rakning, it was 8th last year but its 11th this year, then -3)

Whats behind the spectacular increase at Istanbuls airports? I know tourism is flocking back but posting 30% and 25% increases compared to just 12 months ago is crazy
