La modernisation des transports urbains de la capitale se poursuit, avec le lancement de deux nouveaux projets d'envergure. Après le métro et le tramway, dont les mises en service sont prévues dès 2009, Alger sera dotée de deux nouveaux moyens de transport de voyageurs : un funiculaire et une télécabine. Le premier va relier Tafoura, à proximité du port, à El Biar sur les hauteurs de la ville. La télécabine quant à elle reliera Bab-El Oued à Zghara sur une courte distance. L'Entreprise du Métro (EMA) a lancé la première étape de ces deux projets. Il concerne le recrutement des bureaux d'études et des sociétés de réalisation. Le choix des partenaires devrait être connu début 2009.
Le choix de ces deux moyens est destiné à compenser l'absence de métro et de tramway dans ces zones. Les télécabines et les funiculaires urbains sont généralement utilisés pour des liaisons comportant de fortes pentes. Le funiculaire peut être réalisé en surface comme le tramway ou en tunnel, comme le métro. Dans le cas d'Alger, il est fort probable, au regard de la forte pente, que la première solution soit retenue par le bureau d'étude qui sera choisi.

Funicular is a type of self-contained cable railway in which a cable attached to a pair of tram-like vehicles on rails moves them up and down a very steep slope, the ascending and descending vehicles counterbalancing each other. It can run underground like the metro or aboveground like the tramway. In Algiers and due to the sharp highest from Tafourah to El-Biar it is possible that the Funicular can be above ground. In this case it can offers the passengers a spectacular view to the city and the Mediterranean Sea.

Algiers also will have its fifth telecabine (telepherique) between Bab-El Oued and Zghara situated on the tip of Coucou mount.
