It was torn down in 1829 because it was ramshackle. The city back then was very poor and didn't have the money to renovate it. But before it was torn down it was thoroughly measured, so it could be rebuilt when the economy was better.

Towers in Amsterdam

From left to right: Haringpakkerstoren (the tower that is to be rebuilt), Jan Roodenpoortstoren (also torn down), Zuidertoren, Westertoren, Oudekerkstoren, Montelbaanstoren and Munttoren.

I created this new Amsterdam thread by copying posts from the Dresden Neumarkt thread and thereby followed a complaint of our fellow Dr. :)
I don't want to be impolite.
But could you please make your own thread about reconstructions in Amsterdam? I mean, this project is very interesting but this thread is about Dresden.

Have fun with it!

Ah, the project now has a topic of its own! Thanks Erbse!

Redefining the zoning plan for the area is the next thing at stake, planned for Q3 2009. Then the building permit can be given. If everything goes without any new obstacles, the rebuilding of the tower can begin next year.
