Landmark Vic rock formation collapses

The Great Ocean Road tourist attraction known as the Island Archway may have to consider a name change after part of the rock formation crumbled and fell into the sea.

Parks Victoria believes the fall occurred in the Loch Ard Gorge precinct sometime between 4pm on Tuesday and 9am (AEST) on Wednesday.

As its name suggests, the impressive rock formation resembled an archway rising 25 metres from the sea.

But all that now remains are two rock pillars.

"The southern coastline is always changing. Nature is constantly shaping and reshaping it," Port Campbell National Park acting ranger Natasha Johnson said.

The last significant collapse on the southern coastline was in July 2005, when one of the large stacks that made up the Twelve Apostles collapsed.

"There was significant visitor interest when one of the Twelve Apostles fell down. We expect this event may do the same," Ms Johnson said.

She said Parks Victoria and the Department of Sustainability and Environment regularly conducted maintenance work in areas prone to erosion and landslips to reduce the risk to visitors and the environment.

Would of been wild to see it collapse, reminds me when the arch of the London Bridge collapsed.
This is nature at work, she will be forever carving the shoreline, creating new islands and knocking others over....:)
At least it's transformed into a couple new apostles

I remember London Bridge collaps. I was just a kid at the time and we walked over it only days before it fell. We'd been on a road trip to Adelaide and took the scenic route home. Was quite a scary thought when it happened.

haha, thats why i remember it so well, i was only their 3 days before it fell.
Walked right out and even thought back then what would it be like to get stuck if the arch fell, a group of 4, i think were caught out when it collapsed...:)
This is probably one of the most dynamic and interesting sections of Australian coastline. Its history can be measured not in millions of years but in human life spans.
