There's a big wooden archway under construction at the entrance to the Company's Garden called Arch for Arch, which has been commissioned to celebrate Desmond Tutu's birthday. It's looking pretty cool:

'Arch for Arch' tribute to Tutu planned for Cape Town

Cape Town - The finishing touches are being put to a striking monument for Anglican Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu which will be unveiled in Cape Town in October to celebrate his birthday.

Called "Arch for Arch", the dome-shaped monument will be made of carefully bent wood with the 14 "strands" of the structure inscribed with excerpts from South Africa's Constitution.

It will be positioned between the Anglican St George's Cathedral, the Company's Garden, the Slave Lodge and Parliament in the city.

A team of 28 professionals that includes architects, engineers, an archaeologist and even an arborist is working on the labour of love almost every day.

Nordic architectural firm Snøhetta was commissioned by Design Indaba and the project was sponsored by financial services company Liberty.

This was after Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille asked Design Indaba CEO Ravi Naidoo to help create a monument to honour Tutu's legacy.

I presume the arch is a permanent structure.I note that it is made of wood - but I don't know what kind of wood it is. How is a big wooden construction like this going to fare in Cape Town's long wet winters? Would a structure of stainless steel or aluminium or some other resistant material not have been more practical?

It looks like they're finishing up with this. They were taking down some of the netting this morning. It looks very permanent to me...they removed the paving at the base and it looks like they've built concrete benches underneath it, from what I could see. I'll try inspect it better on my way home.
Vancouver is full of wooden structures and massively rainier than Cape Town. Surely if the wood is selected/treated properly it should last for a long time?

@CONSTRN_TIME_AGAIN You are clearly not the smartest kid on the block. Please stop wasting space on this forum. Since you are a freshman here, I'll give you a little context. E22Sky spams these threads and we're sick of it. So before you judge, take a moment, chill, sit back and observe. Here is a little advice, when you are in the company of people virtually (or in real life), listen (or read) more than you speak. First, it means you are mature, then, when appropriate you can speak. It will allow you to evaluate your words and show discernment in communication. Then you won't embarrass yourself by blowing a gasket and making unfounded statements. Feel free to make an apology to all of us with regards the above.

SAMOHT, feel free to add something constructive on this forum or you are wasting space and other peoples time. No pun intended here may I add. Merely expressing one's opinion and frustrations is one thing, hurling accusations and insults is another. May I suggest you take a couple of extra minutes to compose yourself and articulate your thoughts in a manner that is perhaps more meaningful and comprehensible. Please relax too.

On a side note, I am on this forum as I believe there are people of intellect here and they are in the majority. I am not interested in name calling, race baiting, vitriol and the likes. Frivolous debates and discussions can be had elsewhere.

Can I ask we get back to the forum?

Looks like those sculptures at mall of Africa.
Just chill

^^ Lol, you guys get a bit worked up. @CONSTRN_TIME_AGAIN; just relax on the millennial vibes, prob half of the people on this forum are'nt even living in SA, it has nothing to do with xenophobia, just general annoyance with e22sky 's style of short single line (sometimes completely out of place) comments. @GoClickr; please try not to fuel the backlash to your frustration. We should all just chill and focus on the topic of shitty/good developments in CPT. This is the internet, a place where everyone is anonymous and nothing is a fact, it is really not worth the effort to bicker . :grouphug:

Has anyone else noticed the irony of this hopefully brief outbreak of hostility breaking out in a thread about a monument dedicated to Desmond Tutu, a man so closely associated with peace? Perhaps we should all take some inspiration from him.

It certainly is ironic, however I am not the sort of person who sits back while I see someone with absolutely no malicious intent being bullied (and I doubt Tutu would either). I am no 'freshman', I have been visiting this forum for many years almost on a daily basis, and am familiar with e22sky's comments, and frankly I don't feel anything he has said over the last year warrants such abuse. Referring to a person's appearance and insulting them with extracts from their foreign language is without doubt xenophobic. So please, try exercise a little tolerance and restraint in future, if you find someones comment annoying, take a deep breath and move on, no need for nastiness.

@CONSTRN_TIME_AGAIN Here's a little more education. I speak a bit of Spanish, not fluently but still. Por favor means, please (a very polite and friendly word)in Spanish. A large portion of my extended family lives in Brazil. Also Xenophobia according to the Oxford dictionaries means a 'dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries'. So I don't see how this fits when I used Spanish words.

You'll also note in my comment ("No, no, no, nobody cares what you prefer. Please. Por favor! No more random commentary!") not one insult was made.

On the other hand, your comment ("@e22sky: sorry about these xenophobic idiots above, not all Cape Tonians are such *******s... Its sad and embarrassing to see...) contained two insults. I presume the second one "*******s" was an insult.

Finally, in your very words "So please, try exercise a little tolerance and restraint in future, if you find someone's comment annoying, take a deep breath and move on, no need for nastiness.
