#Article: Weekend Australian 12page report on South Australia

The Weekend Australian last weekend had a 12 page lift-out section on the impending economic boom in South Australia. It's a very good read if you haven't checked it out already.

Many thanks to S-A member Al, for taking the time to scan it in for the rest of us.

Thought it might be handy for some of you investors wanting to know what's going on in SA.

this is long awaited news.
lets hope some new skyscrapers start up with the boom
I hope so too Cul.. with so many false starts over the decades.. it's great to finally see some real growth (some 45 billion dollars worth currently u/c or in planning phases). Now time to get a real CBD happening, if only the council can and government can come together and raise height limits.

I think the whole of Australia needs to get behind this boom, as it'll have benefits for every state in terms of tax cuts, infrastructure, on so forth.

Interestingly the Australian today had a front page article about "Tasmania posed for oil and gas bonanza". They mentioned figures of $22 billion dollars worth. If it comes to fruition just like this SA boom, it will be very strange roll reversals indeed.
^ i'd love to see tassie boom, it is so underated. i just hope it doesn't ruin the place, but then again, the island could easily hold a mil or two people and not intrude much into it's natural surrounds.

on sa, i know it would be great to get taller buildings but with such a large grid in adelaide, it would still be good with developments filling out the grid some more giving it an even better city centre spread than it already has. i know that there's this perth and adelaide rivalry with perth boasting about it's tall towers (rightly so) but adelaides edge is it's excellent grid over many streets giving it a larger feel rather than only a couple of main streets and talls.

That $45bn figure will soon become over $60bn very soon. It keeps climbing all the time, it was about $20bn not so long ago.

Interesting about Tasmania too, and ofcourse the liftout on South Australia. I don't think many people could imagine SA and Tasmania being the future boom states especially given their reputations. Though nothing stays the same, things change.

i'll believe it when i see it.

thats not to say it wont happen, i just wont believe it 'til i see it.

This is going to sound weird but could a TAS boom benifit VIC in any way?
Qantas743, a boom anywhere in Australia is likely to benefit the country. For instance, the resources boom in QLD and WA is partially the reason why our dollar is so high at the moment and why we have been partly insulated from the rising price of oil. I personally don't believe in this whole interstate rivalry thing, we're a small country and should be working together and encouraging developments in some of the under-developed states so as to benefit the nation as a whole.

I think a high Aussie dollar is doing more harm than good. While I think it's fantastic it's keeping petrol at "reasonable" prices, it is destroying our exports and tourism.

Eventually petrol will be so ridiculously high, the Aussie $$ will not matter.

Why should we? Tasmania is not going to boom anytime soon.

PS, they don't need to be in capital letters.
The magnitute of the potential projects in SA is far too great for SA to manage all on its own. A lot of these projects will be farmed out to interstate offices and companies and a lot of the engineeering for example will be done overseas in places like Jakarta where the labour is cheaper.

Thanks Rezz.. it's not going to hurt is it?

That's true Messed Up. Already they're saying that SA needs 500,000 people immediately to meet demand, that's clearly not going to happen. So we should see alot of mergers and partnerships between the states to realise the full value of the boom.

The same was said about Queensland in the early 1980's. Now look at how well your state is doing.

Give SA a chance. I doubt it will ever make the stats Queensland has achieved, but SA will have a lot of critics eating their words in the next two decades. Good luck to them. When you consider alot of factors going for South Australia- and what it currently is-- it's really a sleeping giant.

I am not having a go at at SA at all. The truth is with the curreunt ammount of minerals infrastructure projects going on there just isn't enough labour to meet the demands nationwide. With the biggest projects of them all about to occur in SA there is no way that SA or Victoria or any other single state would be able to manage them all on their own. These days the majority of Engineering companies have office's in all of the capital 's and overseas aswell and a lot of them will have to spread their resources across all offices to meet with the demands for these projects.

interesting, i looked up 4 of the reporters who wrote articles in the lift-out, they're all from or based in South Australia.

was this a piece of journalism or state sponsored propaganda/advertising masquerading as journalism?
