These pictures were taken in late July 2006.

Bayfield

Downtown Bayfield, WI, a tourist-oriented town of 611 about an hour east of Duluth. Notice the downtown grocery store.

Touristy part of downtown:

Ashland

If you head further east down Wisconsin State Highway 13, you'll reach Ashland, a medium-sized town of 8,620, and the largest within an hour's drive. I was surprised to see how well-preserved and apparently vibrant the downtown was. There is also a Wal-Mart there and a college.

Movie theater and library (?)

JC Penny Department Store, downtown

Cute building

Summary:

Ashland's own short lived TV station, WAST-LP 25, a UPN affiliate. They even had a newscast:

What impressed me about Ashland's downtown is how they managed to put a lot of "everyday" (non-tourist oriented) businesses into the historic downtown, often in historic buildings - and all this with a Wal-Mart not far down the highway.

Hope you enjoyed them!

Sorry about the quality of some of these pics...the resizer program I was using didn't smooth them very well.

TVDXER,
I really appreciated these photos. I love Wisconsin and I've lived in many parts of it, visited many others, but never actually made it all the way up to Ashland or Bayfield...yet hearing so much about them, and loving the old historic lakeshore towns, I've always been curious as to what they were like. Thes pics give me a bit of a taste of it. Thanks for posting them!
I haven't spent much time in Ashland but I've been to Bayfield several times. My friends actually run a coffeeshop/cafe in downtown called Blue Horizons. In fact, if you want to read the restroom rating review for it, go here. Haha, I love that website.

Anyway... nice photos. I'd love to go back there some day... such a fantastic place.
heh interesting my parents just went up there this weekend. anyways nice Pics i myself have never really been to bayfield and only went to a beach in ashland though i have been to washburn at some park where you could see downtown ashland across the bay it looks more intresting then i thought it would.
I like Ashland, the Bristol Building is awesome!
Both towns are wonderful little gems in northern Wisconsin – I stopped in both last fall en route to the Apostle Islands for a camping trip. What a gorgeous area. I really wish I could say the same about Superior.

Yeah, I really don't like Superior myself.
Both places look nice. I've wondered what those Wisconsin towns near Lake Superior look like.
Northern Wisconsin has some definite gems. Thanks for sharing these interesting shots.
Thanks for the pictures they are great.
My wife and I almost moved to Ashland years ago to get away from it all. I was really excited and it seems like a nice town..we ended up in St Peter Minnesota which has been great itself but I sure love being by the big lake.
Wisconisn looks like a clean and safe state.
