Double track project to boost NE rail connectivity

Assam Tribune

MORIGAON, May 11 - The Northeast will get better rail connectivity and services with the expansion of the double track project in the region, said Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain.

The Railway Ministry will complete the double track project up to Guwahati via Goalpara within a short period of time, he said, adding that efforts are on to expand the project through the Saraighat Bridge via Rangiya.

Gohain told this correspondent today that as per direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Railway Ministry has laid emphasis on establishing better rail connectivity in the Northeast to promote tourism and other sectors that have great potential in the region.

He said all the processes have been completed for electric train traffic in Assam, and Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has endorsed the projects to connect all the NE state capitals.

The rail connectivity between Silghat and Tezpur through the Kalia Bhumura Bridge on the Brahmaputra is also proposed by the Ministry, he said.

Gohain said 29 new trains have already been introduced for the region and connectivity between the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys is now better. The Ministry has also proposed to declare the old Haflong station as a heritage station. Some tourist trains will also be introduced shortly in the NE states to give the tourism sector in the region a fillip, he mentioned.

Regarding the recruitment policy of the NF Railway, he said the Ministry has chalked out a policy to recruit local youths in the grade III and IV posts through NE-based examination. As regards a separate 24-hour Doordarshan channel for Assam, Gohain said he would request the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to open such a channel for Assam, in the lines of the Arunprabha channel opened for Arunachal Pradesh.

The NFR on Monday said the Energy Efficiency Services Ltd, an agency engaged by it to carry out the work, would be paid from savings it would make from its energy bill.

The NFR's chief public relations officer, Pranav Jyoti Sharma, said 260 stations had already been fitted with LED lights and the rest would be done by March end.

After the LED fittings in the stations, other offices and staff quarters will also be fitted with LED lights.
