At last, it's gold for John Wood

AFTER a decade of disappointment, veteran actor John Wood has finally struck gold.
The Blue Heelers star last night won the 2006 TV Week Gold Logie after nine previous unsuccessful nominations.
Wood rode to victory on a swell of public support in a year when voting was opened to all of Australia via mobile phone text messages.
It has been a tough professional year for Wood, who saw his series cancelled and then relegated to a poor-rating Saturday night timeslot for the remainder of its episodes.
"Winning is a nice way to finish the series, a good way to finish up, but in some ways I've felt, for a while, like I'd already won," he said.
"The level of support I've received from all around the country has been great."
Several radio stations held "John Wood Wednesdays" to encourage people to vote for the actor, who also won the Silver Logie for the second consecutive year and fourth time overall.
U.S. star Joan Rivers, who accompanied Wood down the red carpet, confidently proclaimed "this is his night" hours before the announcement.
Meanwhile, Adelaide-made drama McLeod's Daughters failed to convert its success into gold, missing out on every award for which it had been nominated.
The Channel 9 series, filmed in Gawler and the Barossa Valley, was soundly trumped by teen favourite Home and Away and cable TV critics' darling Love My Way, while actors Bridie Carter, Aaron Jeffery and Jonny Pasvolsky missed out on statuettes for individual achievement.
The bleak run is at least partially due to the broadening of categories in 2006. For the first time, soapies such as Home and Away and Neighbours were eligible for nomination. Home and Away stalwart Kate Ritchie and talk show host Rove McManus also left Melbourne's Crown Casino with silver statues.
"You don't expect to win, any year," McManus, a three-time Gold Logie winner, said.
Channel 7 was the most awarded network, winning seven statuettes to ratings rival Channel 9's two.
Ratings juggernaut Dancing With the Stars scored in the light entertainment category, while ABC-TV's coverage of Aceh won Most Outstanding News Coverage.
