Glad to see more density in Midtown Atlanta, but this particular tower is pretty average. It looks like a lot of other buildings and the parking deck takes up too much space.

Then again, they can't all be architectural wonders. :) I think there is a place for average towers that look like a lot of other buildings, but I agree about the parking deck. I wonder if there is a plan to build a 3rd tower on top of it? I seem to remember the orginial renderings including 3 towers on the site.

Good point that not everything needs to be an icon. Atlanta already has some really excellent skyscrapers, and to some degree what it needs most it in-fill, and that in-fill doesn't all have to be exceptionally original.

My bigger problem is def that great big parking deck. From what I have read it is really tough/expensive to do underground parking in ATL, but I wish they would work harder to disguise or incorporate the parking rather than just having huge decks. Putting a tower on top would be a good option, or perhaps wrapping it with more retail (I know there is some) or with row/town-houses like I saw in a recent thread on Vancouver.

Why do the initial renderings look so much better than the finished building?

That usually happens except when the render is so awful it makes your brain peel...
Well, the roof is blech and the curbside appeal is lacking, but on the whole we've seen worse. So long as this isn't replicated over and over I won't complain.

Much like runway models: Makeup and airbrushing does wonders for altering reality!

It's cookie cutter like most Novare projects. And because these are rentals, they aren't going to be given anything near the finesse and architectural distinction that luxury condos get.
