Austin as I see it

Hello, everyone. I'm Haux. You may, but probably don't, remember my threads about Amarillo, Texas, and the space shuttle that landed there aboard a 747 in 2009.

But I live in a new city now. An exciting city. A city where stuff happens and there are actual skyscrapers and urban transit and things to see and do. I moved to Austin in late August 2011 to take a job at the Austin American-Statesman. It's a temporary job, but it was too good to pass up.

Now, I'll start this thread with just an assortment of photos. I'll later branch out to individual topics like Barton Creek, the 360 bridge and the top of the Austonian.

Anyway, I've written too many words without any pictures, so here's Austin as I see it.

Austin's called Silicon Hills, comparing it to Silicon Valley because of the high-tech industry here.

The Lady Bird Lake hike-and-bike trail is a 10-mile trail around the lake. I love it.

OK, I think that's enough for now. I'll continue to post photos if this thread gets any views.

I like your pictures.

Austin is not so well known in the Netherlands, except for the oil companies most likely.
Did you take that picture on the bridge where the bats fly over? Or is that another city in Texas?
That is the bridge with the bats. I think I can make a post of all the bats too. I tried to shoot them last night, but they came out way after sunset.
Great pictures, thanks for sharing  I'm plannig a trip do Texas this summer, and Austin is one of the "most go" places :D I look forward to see more great pictures
Great pictures.

Can I ask you a question? Texas has a large coastline - but we never hear of it or see any pictures. Is it sandy? Is it used for leisure purposes? I'm very curious.
:applause:Congratulations on the new job and move to a photogenic city in progress. Do Austin justice. Looks like your off to a good start.:cheers1:
great thread...thanks for sharing your beautiful photos from Austin...
Amazing photos :) I hope this thread will keep growing and learn us more about lovely Austin
Cool thread, haux!

I'd like to see more street level shots of Austin if you ever get a chance. Looking at these photos, one might think the city didn't exist until 1995. :)

There aren't any major cities on the Gulf Coast of Texas, which I think is why it's underrepresented here. Galveston is a smaller city on the Gulf (with lots of nice Victorian architecture) and isn't too terribly far from Houston, so hopefully someone will get down there sometime for a photo tour.

Yes, Texas has a very sandy coastline – there are big resort areas, especially in and around Corpus Christi, and on Padre Island.
Great, very nice photos from Austin :)
nice city and the handful of crapers really have iconic designs.
Austin holds a special place in my heart. It's great to see your pictures.
Great pictures.

Texas coastline is awesome..... On the northern part of the coastline, Galveston, Rockport, etc... it is sandy, and fine for water activity, but better for fishing. From Port Aransas to Corpus Christi, it's good for both. Padre Island, in particular, South Padre Island, is THE spot to visit if you want a perfect "beach" experience though.
I like your pictures.

Houston is actually the Texas city with the oil companies. Austin would probably be best known internationally for it's music scene, and its diversity. It's the "live music capitol of the world."
I love those pictures..... If you ever get a chance, a great place to photograph the skyline at dusk, or at night, is on MoPac (Loop 1) right over the river. One of my favorite views. Austin is so much more than just the downtown area. Zilker park, which you took a few pictures from, Barton Springs, Barton Creek, Loop 360 (Capitol Of TX Hwy,) Lake Travis, HWY 620, 360 bridge, Mt. Bonnel, all offer great views, and experiences that make Austin so enjoyable.
A few weeks ago, a fellow forum member took a group of us to his home, The Austonian. The Austonian is the tallest building in the city at 683 feet. People who live in it have access to the top two floors, the 55th and 56th floors. There are patios on those two floors that give spectacular views of the surrounding metro region.

It was pretty sweet being that high up. I think my next update will be the Barton Creek Greenbelt. I went right after a day of rain, so it was really flowing.
Sooooweet..........:righton:
Barton Creek Greenbelt

I was here last month after a weekend with plenty of rain, so the creek was really flowing. I haven't been there since then, but I saw one picture from a week or two ago, and it's back to a trickle or dry. This drought's killing us.

Great! Austin is my favorite city from Texas, has a lot of green spaces and a nice riverfront, I like the rate of growing, it has over 800,000 inh. and still growing, absolutely fascinating.
I like the trees and the water scenery.:)
