Interesting but worth a discussion, I support a change in mentality from both State and Federal governments to recognize the growth of North Queensland and allocate funds accordingly.

It's about time some of the mining royalties got passed back onto us rather than sent straight down to Brisbane/SEQ...

Calls for state of North Queensland revived

THE populations of Cairns and Townsville have surpassed Tasmania for the first time, sparking fresh calls for a separate state for North Queensland. The combined population of 514,046 for the Townsville and Cairns regions is ahead of Tasmania's 510,519. Kennedy MP Bob Katter says the news "screams out for a separate state", while business leaders say it's time the two regions used their combined muscle to lobby for more government resources and funding.

"I have long argued for (a separate state) north from Rockhampton," Mr Katter said. The maverick MP said if statehood can't be achieved in the short term, a more realistic goal would be to have separate budgets for the north and south of Queensland. "Administratively we could be separate, with each responsible for their own budget," he said.

Analysis of the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures by researcher Rick Carr has found that the joint population of the two cities is 3527 more than Australia's smallest state. The Herron Todd White research director said previously the populations of both cities were 505,739 when Tasmania was 507,281. "Rather than inane debates about the relative merits of Cairns versus Townsville, the issue should be more about having a united voice that gives us the recognition as a region that Tasmania gets as a state in places like Brisbane and Canberra," Mr Carr said.

Townsville Enterprise general manager Ross Contarino said the Federal and State Government needed to spend more on infrastructure in both cities. "I welcome the Newman Government looking at the Bruce Highway," he said. "The concept behind decentralisation makes a lot of sense." Mr Contarino said he was in discussions with the Newman Government about developing a revised version of the Townsville Futures Plan, which was a Bligh Government initiative. "We want to work towards a revised Townsville Futures Plan otherwise things happen in an ad hoc fashion," he said.

Katter calls for North Queensland statehood

Bob Katter is calling for North Queensland to be granted statehood, and self governing rights. It comes as the combined populations of Townsville and Cairns for the first time grow larger than that of Tasmania, the Townsville Bulletin reports.

The member for Kennedy, an area which covers more than half a million kilometres, is larger than Spain and runs from the coast to the border, said the region "screams out for a separate state". "I have long argued for (a separate state) north from Rockhampton," Katter said, adding that if self governing could not be achieved then the state could at least split into two different administrative regions. "Administratively we could be separate, with each responsible for their own budget," he said. His comments follow the latest ABS figures which show that Townsville and Cairns now have 3572 more people than Tasmania. This is not the first time this notion has been put forward.

There have been calls for a northern economic zone for some time. In September last year, Hugh Tobin from the Institute of Public Affairs told Australian Mining "a Northern Special Economic Zone, comprising Northern Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and Northern Queensland will allow Australia to make the most of our natural mineral wealth and will reduce some of the problems that exist for people living in these regions". He went on to say that the introduction of an SEZ in Northern Australia has widespread public support.

"Galaxy poll results released by the IPA in June [2011] indicate that 60% of Australians support low taxes to stimulate economic growth in the north." The researcher that compiled the data, Rick Carr, said "rather than inane debates about the relative merits of Cairns versus Townsville, the issue should be more about having a united voice that gives us the recognition as a region that Tasmania gets as a state in places like Brisbane and Canberra". The north of Queensland is minerals rich, and contains much of Australia's zinc, lead, and copper miners, with operations such as Xstrata's Mt Isa, Cloncurry, and Ernest Henry mines, as well as MMG Century's zinc mine.

lol... this was discussed a few years ago already..

maybe it might happen now that the liberals are in power. Under Labor it wasn't going to happen.

Also there was a talk of splitting the top half of the NT with Qld and the bottom half of the NT and part of SA to become another state again... lol or a few other combinations...

yeah i recall Katter wanted part of the NT to become part of the Northern Qld state at one stage too - lol...

Out of Cairns and Townsville, whichever isn't made capital will be resentful. Then We'll have a North-North-Queensland state split off!
Split them down the middle(ish) and make Ingham the capital. Bit like how Canberra was made capital at Federation to shut up Sydney and Melbourne. I think it should be done, then northern WA could follow suit.

The costs alone would be massive wouldn't it? But yes I do believe the north should have their own state as SE is being held back by the North and vice versa :)

NZ should be Australia's 7th state. I think there's even a clause allowing it to be included as a state in our constitution

Section 6 of the preamble. Apparently it allows for any state which did not join federation in 1901, to do so whenever they want, at their own will. The other states can't stop it either. I haven't actually read it, just read those details off another site.
Since New Zealand was the only colony not to join, this applies to them only.

But it's never going to happen anyway. New Zealand has established it self as it's own independent country.

Agreed.

All the bogan ******** can move/be deported to this new state.

Then we can build a wall around it and forget these people and their grip on power even exist.
